The Jackets must put the triumphs of last night's win behind them and gear it right back up, as they take on the hottest team in the NHL.

Opponent's Blog: Anaheim Calling

How jumbled is the Metro and the East right now? Well, the Jackets won last night and jumped from 6th to 2nd in the Metro, and 12th to 6th in the East. Part of that is a factor of games played, but part of it also is that there's a giant crumpled heap in the middle of this conference right now. It also highlights the importance of how the Jackets are playing while they wait for some injured guys to get healthy.

At any rate, as great as last night's win was, and as important as every game is, tonight's contest is going to be that much tougher. If the Jackets come out slowly like they did last night (on top of being tired already), they will get run over. This Ducks team is firing on all cylinders right now, and after losing their first game they're ripped off six in a row.

The Jackets had an optional skate this morning, and so we don't have much to go on in the way of lineup changes. I'm leaving the projected lineups alone from yesterday, as I think Dalton Prout gets back in after Cody Goloubef had a bit of a hiccup in the third period last night. That said, with respect to who draws in on the fourth line and how the lines shake out, Todd Richards is like the Ohio weather: if you don't like it, wait five minutes.

Also, in case you've forgotten, beyond the chart below in this preview, we do not refer to certain players by their given surnames. Thanks again, Morgan.

Cam Atkinson injured after taking Ryan Kesler skate to face

$

Columbus Blue Jackets winger Cam Atkinson was cut Friday night when he accidentally got hit in the face by the skate blade of Ryan Kesler.

For the second time this week an NHL player had to leave a game after being hit in the face by an opponent's skate.

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Cam Atkinson was cut when he was accidentally struck in the face by Ryan Kesler's skate blade late in the third period of their game in Anaheim on Friday night.

Kesler was involved along the wall with Atkinson and Columbus defenseman Jack Johnson when he lost his balance causing his right skate to fly in the air. It was then that it cut Atkinson across the face.

Here is a link to the play via @PeteBlackburn, but be warned that it's pretty scary.

Blue Jackets beat writer Aaron Portzline reports that there was no damage to Atkinson's eye and that the cut was just below his right eye.

On Tuesday, New York Islanders defenseman Thomas Hickeywas involved in a similar incident against the Toronto Maple Leafs when he was struck by the skate blade of Mike Santorelli.

In six games this season Atkinson has scored three goals and recorded two assists for the Blue Jackets.

Ducks Win Seventh Straight, 4-1 Over Columbus

Goals from Corey Perry, Sami Vatanen, Devante Smith-Pelly and an empty netter from Ryan Getzlaf propelled the Ducks in a relatively complete team game.

Final Score: Anaheim Ducks 4, Columbus Blue Jackets 1

Chart courtesy war-on-ice.com

First Period:

Corey Perry ended the last game, against Buffalo with a bang and he picked up right where he left off.  Only seconds into the game David Savard was called for hooking Jakob Silfverberg sending the Ducks on the power play and it took Perry just over a minute of PP time to drive the net, dangle around the poke check of Sergei Bobrovsky and give the Ducks a 1-0 lead on the first shot of the game.

The Ducks killed a Nate Thompson penalty then it was Sami Vatanen's turn to strike with the extra man.  During Matt Calvert's hooking penalty the Vat-Man skated himself into some space, stepped up to the top of the circle and just wired one right through Perry's screen and Bobrovsky to double the lead.  Of course three of the Jackets' four wins on the season came as a result of two goal comebacks so one could argue, at that point they had the Ducks exactly where they wanted them.

Sure enough, thanks to a Ben Lovejoy tripping penalty and an unlucky bounce off of Hampus Lindholm, Columbus pulled within one.  Ryan Johansen made a nice pass to Scott Hartnell in the slot, on which John Gibson made the save, but unfortunately batted the rebound out of mid air off of Lindholm and into the net.  2-1 Ducks.

Although all of the scoring came on the power plays in the first period there were a number of mad scrambles around both goalies' creases at even strength as well.  For some reason the puck seemed to be sitting in front of the goal a lot, without anyone able to clear, cover or score in the first 20 minutes.

Second Period:

Undoubtedly the star of the second period for me was Devante Smith-Pelly.  Playing up with Ryan Getzlaf and Perry does wonders for just about everyone, but DSP had three outstanding chances in this period alone.  The first came on a very heavy shift in which he got laid out by James Wisniewski on one attempted breakout, then returned the favor on the next time up ice creating a 2-on-1 with Perry.  Smith-Pelly took the shot, which caused Bobrovsky no trouble whatsoever.  But the play ended with one of the more odd things you'll see in a hockey game.  Perry and Wisniewski got tangled up and the achilles guards on their skates got intertwined so that neither could get free.  It was actually a little scary at first because the play was whistled down as if one or both of them were hurt, but as it turned out it was just comical.

Devo's second chance was even better a few minutes later when Perry's shot from distance hit him, got tangled up in his gear and nobody else seemed to know where it was.  From a prone position on his belly, DSP shoveled the puck out of his body to his stick and nearly tapped it right around the unsuspecting Bobrovsky, but no dice.

Third time was the charm for DSP though as once again he was set up in front of the net, Getzlaf sent a rink wide pass to Perry who threw it right to Smith-Pelly for a neat little redirection through Bobrovsky's pads as he tried and to get back and forth across his crease.  And the second period ended with the Ducks outshooting Columbus 20-12 and with a 3-1 lead in the column that really counts.

Third Period:

The third period was mostly marked by a couple of injuries to the Jackets, which is the last thing that they need, having already been ravaged by the injury bug.  three minutes in Adam Cracknell and Nate Thompson went awkwardly into the boards and Cracknell's left leg got pinned underneath himself.  He left the game with assistance, not putting any weight on the leg, luckily he was able to return to the game.

As for the actual play, the first half of the period or so was a little score effect-y with the Ducks doing a heck of a lot of defending, but that all changed once they got back onto the power play and fired up by a little bit of nastiness.  Hartnell took a bit of a run at Lindholm behind the Ducks net, sticking out is leg to make contact with Lindholm who had almost gotten out of the way.  The Ducks didn't take too kindly to that and chippiness ensued.  The only call was the original one against Hartnell for what they deemed a trip. The fourth man advantage for the Ducks was firing on all cylinders but couldn't quite break through.

Just at the tail end of that power play was the other scary injury to a Columbus player occurred as Ryan Kesler entered the zone, got tripped up and clipped Cam Atkinson in the face with his skate.  Luckily again, Atkinson was able to skate off on his own power and after the blood was scraped off the ice, he even came back to play one more shift in the game.  The good news for the Ducks was that the dominance displayed on that last power play carried over to the rest of the game, they were able to finish strong and call it a relatively complete game.

With about three minutes left, Getzlaf led Perry into the zone with a bank pass, the league's leading goal scorer flew down the left wing and wired one up high, but off the upper 90 and out, proving that he is in fact human.  With Bobrovsky pulled Getzlaf missed the net from the blueine, but was able to seal it on his second attempt.  For the second game in a row the Ducks prevailed by a score of 4-1.

After the empty netter there was the small matter of Clayton Stoner and Jared Boll dropping the gloves, but the only thing to land was Stoner's butt on the ice.

********************

The Good: Similar to Sunday night's game against St. Louis, the Ducks were pretty clearly the better team in just about every aspect of the game.  Also similar to St. Louis, Columbus wasn't quite fully armed and operational but the Ducks did well to take advantage of that and thoroughly beat the team that was put in front of them, which is about all we can ask.  It was also good to see John Gibson getting back on the horse, even if he wasn't tested all that much, with only 17 shots faced.

The Bad: As I mentioned, it was a pretty complete game from the Ducks barring one tough bounce and a flat start to the third period with a two goal lead.  Really there wasn't much bad, which was particularly good to see that they didn't carry over any bad habits from the Buffalo game, the way they did the first time.

The Ugly: Richard Kober Alert!  I'm going to rag on the fans a bit.  The reactions to both the Perry/Wiz skate tangle and the Atkinson skate cut were less than ideal.  In the former case, it was laughter which is understandable to some extent but when a play has to be stopped because your RED HOT goal scorer is down, possibly injured, maybe wait a sec to confirm before cracking up.  Worse than that was booing while Atkinson laid face down on the ice, because the Ducks had the advantage.  I'll admit I didn't see the skate blade hit his face until getting home and checking the replays but it was pretty clear that something bad happened and the play was justifiably stopped even before the blood scrapers had to come out.  But all's well that ends well, nobody was seriously hurt in either case and I had was forced to go on about that instead of ranting about how horrid the power play was, like last year.

********************

3rd MVD: Jakob Silfverberg - Partially so that I'm not just re-ordering the official three stars, but also because he had several good chances to open his goal scoring account for the season, but still hasn't quite broken through.  Good signs from Silf that he's getting the chances, just needs to find the finishing stick.

2nd MVD: Devante Smith-Pelly - just seemed to be all over the place, especially in that second period.

1st MVD: Corey Perry - probably the main reason that DSP was so good tonight.  Perry is just feeling it right now, with a league leading nine goals in only eight games.  I'm happy to ride this wave as long as it lasts.

The Devils are off to a mixed start this season. Their eight points have them tied with Ottawa but with two extra games played the record is a not-great 3-2-2, all three of the wins coming off the start of the season.  The possession numbers haven't been great (but with a few more bright spots than Ottawa so far), and the penalty kill has been downright terrible at just over 70%.  The power play has made up for that somewhat though, at 26% and 8th in the league.

Off-season signing Mike Cammalleri has been working out nicely so far, with a point per game pace backed up by solid play.  Adam Henrique also has a point per game pace on the go in this young season.  Jaromir Jagr continues to play like he's 5-10 years younger than he actually is.

Corey Schneider has struggled at points this season, posting sub-.900 numbers against Philly, Washington and the Rangers.  At other points he has excelled, with save percentages above .940 against Florida, Tampa and Dallas.  He's started every game for the Devils so far this season, but the back to back (going to the shootout, no less) we might see the season debut of Scott Clemensen in Ottawa.

Jordin Tootoo is out with an injured foot.

The Blackhawks are off to a pretty strong start to the season.  In six games, they've got a record of 4-1-1.  The only regulation loss came in their last game against the surprising powerhouse Predators, the overtime loss was to Jonas Hiller (and a bunch of other guys, I guess).

Patrick Sharp and Brandon Saad are both setting an early point per game pace, with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews not too far behind them.

The success is built on a strong foundation of play as well.  While their season average possession numbers are skewed heavily by the games against Buffalo and Calgary, they're still firmly a positive possession team even without those two games.  The Chicago power play is pretty much in the middle of the pack so far, but the penalty kill has been solid at just under 90%.

Antti Raanta has had mixed results filling in for the injured Corey Crawford - one shutout, one .889 SV% game. With the back to back it is possible that the Sens face Scott Darling in his NHL debut.

They've got one injury at the moment, Corey Crawford is day to day with an upper body injury.

Kings Gameday: Sriracha

$

Okay so it's not a Mexican hot sauce, but whatever

Those other losers may be talking about Tapatio and Cholula, but let's be real. The best hot sauce is Sriracha. Yes, Sriracha isn't a Latino type of sauce, and those other two may be better for tacos and burritos, but they don't have the range and versatility of Sriracha. It doesn't matter what you are eating, throw some Sriracha on that shit and it's even better. Rice, burgers, ice cream, whatever. Sriracha is going on it. You can add it to sour cream. It's immediately a product now edible for everyone and not just white people.

Now this brings us to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Let's say the Los Angeles Kings are a well assembled Asian meal. You got Jonathan Quick, who we will say is the rice. Rice is vital to your dish. You need to have it, though it is very easy to screw up. It can quickly make the rest of the dish worse, though if you cooked your rice correctly, the rest of the meal could suck, but it doesn't matter because your rice is so damn good. It's salvaged simply thanks to your rice. Then you have Anze Kopitar, and let's say he is the beef. This is the best damn part to eat. It's great on it's own and makes everything else around it even better. Alec Martinez is the chilies that get thrown in, and this is because I could simply joke and say he is muy caliente. Drew Doughty is water-chestnuts. They look like doughy, soft clumps of crap, yet are pretty great and liven things up. Yes, I like those things, whatever. Everybody else is various vegetables. Mike Richards is the out of place orange peel added for no reason and shouldn't be there since you distinctly said WHY THE FUCK WOULD I HAVE ORANGE PEEL HERE SINCE I CAN'T EAT IT?

But there is still something lacking. Everything works pretty nicely together but it needs a kick. That's when you ask Columbus if they have any Sriracha sauce. You add a healthy dose of Sriracha, which in this case is Jeff Carter and Marian Gaborik, and now you have a kick ass bunch of food in front of you. In return all they got was a single red pepper flake with Matt Frattin, and what they thought was a scallop and instead was an expired marshmallow you found on the floor named Jack Johnson. Best of all you keep the Sriracha from going to things like the Columbus Rowboat, the Columbus Chili Dog, the Columbus Coffee Shot, or the Columbus Chocolate Milk.

I cannot say this enough, but hahahahaha thanks Columbus. You're the best.

The Kings finally won a game and the fancy stats. Against Buffalo, which means nothing since everyone beats up on them. I mean, you'd have to be a pretty shittastic team to lose to Buffalo. Especially in regulation. It doesn't really seem like it, but the Kings have won five straight and have eleven out of fourteen points so far.

Prediction: Jonathan Quick finally has another bad game and the Kings lose 5-3.

Los Angeles Kings v Blue Jackets (Staples Center)

Time: 1.00 PM

TV: Fox Sports West

Kings projected lineup:

Pearson - Carter - Toffoli
Andreoff - Stoll - Williams
Clifford - Richards - Nolan

Doughty - Muzzin
Regehr - Martinez
McNabb - Greene

Quick

Injured: Gaborik (??), Lewis ("upper-middle body"); Suspended: Voynov

Blue Jackets projected lineup:

Hartnell - Johansen - Foligno
Calvert - Wennberg - Skille
Letestu - Anisimov - Tropp
Cracknell - Chaput - Boll

Johnson - Savard
Erixon - Wisniewski
Tyutin - Prout

Bobrovsky

Injured: Dubinsky (abdominal), Jenner (hand), Horton (back), Dano (lower body), Atkinson (face), Murray (knee)

Enemy reading: The Cannon

Game notes:
  • I hate the NFL for many reasons, and one of those reasons is that Kings fans have to endure watching so many of these terrible Sunday afternoon games. I know it's not as bad for me as it is for you guys, but it's still pretty annoying.
  • Don't get your hopes up - this is almost definitely going to be a terrible game. The Blue Jackets, when healthy, are an average team in the East. They're not as good as the Kings are, but on any given day, they're certainly capable of playing (and winning) a good competitive game against the Kings. Unfortunately, five four of their best players are injured. Although they've managed to come out to a 4-3 record, this next stretch could be pretty rough for them.
  • Apparently Ryan Murray will be playing today and Alexander Wennberg has been sent back to the AHL, so I have no idea what is happening with the lines.
  • The latest news on Nathan Horton is that his career might be over due a degenerative back condition. This is awful for a lot of reasons, obviously. Over at The Cannon, Matt Wagner wrote a little bit about degenerative disc disease, and his family's struggle with it.
  • There isn't much news to report on the Kings. The lineup will be the same tonight as it was on Thursday. Trevor Lewis remains on IR, not skating. Marian Gaborik has begun skating, but isn't ready to return. I thought Jake Muzzin looked fine on Thursday, which is a relief.
  • Prediction: Kings win 4-0, from a Jack Johnson own goal and a Jeff Carter hat trick.

First and foremost, please note the early start time. Especially if you play for the Jackets. They've had a hard enough time showing up for the beginnings of games lately that bumping the time up six hours could only compound things.

I also forgot to note this, which is why your preview is up a mere two hours ahead of time. I have shame.

At any rate, the Jackets will be playing their third game in basically 65 hours this afternoon, which kind of sucks. The Kings haven't played since Thursday (and have only played ONE ROAD GAME SO FAR WTFFFFF), so it's all good. Nevermind the stupid scheduling of a back to back for Columbus--with travel across California in there--instead of having the back-to-back be Anaheim/LA when the team is, ya know, IN THE SAME METRO AREA. Or that the Jackets fly home--across three times zones--and play again on Tuesday. No worries, NHL schedule making sadists... we got this. Assholes.

The Jackets have had some disturbing trends of late, namely not being ready for the starts of games, taking dumb penalties because of this, and getting scored on early by being on the PK before the ice is dry. The comeback Thursday night was nice, but this team simply cannot keep playing this way, especially against good teams. (Also disturbing is how quickly the PK went south from "we haven't been scored on through five games!" to "holy God we can't stop anyone's PP!")

The Kings are, obviously, a good team.

So, let's not do it again. Please. For the sake of my eyeballs. I mean, I have to watch the Browns at the same time, don't make me bleed, guys.

In roster news, Cam Atkinson is the big name missing from today's lineup, as he suffered a facial injury in Anaheim. Some other notes include that both Curtis McElhinney and Ryan Murray got activated from IR today, with Anton Forsberg and Alexander Wennberg going back to Springfield. Murray is expected to play today. What all of this means for lines/pairs, who can say. I assume it means Marko Dano is playing. Otherwise, the Jackets simply don't have enough forwards with Atkinson and Wennberg gone, and no one added to the roster up front.

I'll take a wild stab in the dark, just like always.

Nick Foligno stretchered off ice after collision with linesman

An innocent play became scary incredibly quickly.

A scary situtation unfolded in Los Angeles on Sunday when Columbus Blue Jackets forward Nick Foligno was carried off the ice on a stretcher after colliding with a linesman.

Foligno was skating along the benches midway through the third period when a Los Angeles Kings defenseman shoved him up against the wall. What looked like a rather innocent play turned dangerous when a linesman couldn't get out of the way before Foligno's head collided with his hip. Foligno immediately fell to the ice and lay motionless for a few moments.

foligno

Foligno did show motion in his arms and head briefly after the incident, but trainers from both teams wisely brought out the stretcher and took time to position him safely before carrying him away as he gave a thumbs up to the crowd.

The Blue Jackets released some relieving news minutes after Foligno left the ice.

Blue Jackets @ Kings Recap: LA Finishes Perfect Homestand, Loses Kopitar

Pearson, Carter, and Toffoli rack up four more goals to lead the Kings to a 5-2 win, but Kopitar leaves the game with an upper-body injury.

This afternoon, the Los Angeles Kings beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2. It's hard to write a recap when you can't figure out what the biggest storyline is, so I'll just write about everything and let you vote on it below. Good? Good.

[Box Score]

Early on, it wasn't a particularly exciting game, though there was quite a bit going on. The Blue Jackets were the only team to get on the board in the first period, after a Drew Doughty interference call gave Columbus a power play. It was a well-worked goal, too; Ryan Johansen slapped a shot-pass toward Scott Hartnell in front, who tipped it sideways for a hard-charging Tim Erixson. Jake Muzzin had two opportunities to stretch out and knock the puck away, but his first try missed, and his second only moved about six inches before Erixson's stick came in and knocked it past Jonathan Quick.

Before that? Just a bunch of shenanigans. Corey Tropp went about 50 feet to lay a big hit on Justin Williams, and Matt Greene took exception and earned the ol' 2-5-10 for his trouble. Not to be outdone, Scott Hartnell decided to punch Martin Jones on the Kings' bench, and after Jordan Nolan poked Hartnell in the back with his stiick. Hartnell got angry and took a roughing penalty. That all happened in the first two minutes, and considering the injuries which would come later, it was a wonder no one got hurt early on. Overall, it was a good period for LA, but the Kings' even strength domination didn't pay off. (First period visual recap: here.)

LA wasted no time working their way back into the game in the second period. Columbus took consecutive penalties to set up a 5-on-3, and LA put their absolutely terrifying new-look power play on the ice: Anze Kopitar, Drew Doughty, Jeff Carter, Tanner Pearson, and Tyler Toffoli. The result was predictable once Tyler Toffoli smartly drove to the net, drawing two defenders and the goalie his way. Toffoli flipped it back across, and both Kopitar and Carter had a chance to knock it in; Carter did the deed to tie the score. Ten minutes later, Kopitar was injured on this play, leaving the rest of the team to find some scoring.

You already know who ended up handling most of THAT. Tyler Toffoli gave the Kings their first lead, as Jeff Carter got the rebound of a Robyn Regehr shot and decided to pass (perfectly) instead of shoot. The eventual game-winner, though, was the only one that did not come from the second (first?) line. Dwight King didn't find the net with Kopitar at center despite some great possession numbers over the last couple games, so naturally, he scored on his second shift without Kopitar. Justin Williams made a controlled entry into the zone and his shot was deflected high into the air by Sergei Bobrovsky's blocker. King was the most aware player on the ice, and though his baseball swing at the puck missed, he immediately wristed it past Bobrovsky once it landed. (Second period visual recap: here.)

Mark Letestu's last-minute goal in the second meant that LA couldn't simply sit on their lead in the third. But without Kopitar in the third period, the Kings once again got the necessary offense from the NHL's most prolific line. Tanner Pearson's two goals in the third meant that, for the third time in eight games, all three members had found the net in the same game. The first goal came out of almost nothing, as Toffoli lobbed a puck down the ice and Pearson got to it first. Pearson had no space to drive in towards the net, so he simply rang a perfect wrister off the post and in. By the time Pearson scored on a rebound with five minutes to go (assists by Carter and Toffoli), the Kings were able to relax. Quick, of course, was part of that once again, with an absurd pad save on Letestu providing a good ending. (Third period visual recap: here.) Final: 5-2. Final homestand record: 6-0-0.

(One more note: Nick Foligno was taken off the ice on a stretcher after a scary third-period collision with a linesman along the boards. He was conscious and moving immediately after the hit and was able to lift his to the crowd as he left the ice. He stayed at Staples for further evaluation, but the early word from the Blue Jackets and media is that he will be all right. That's great news.)

Game 8 Recap: A Loss Beyond The Scoreboard

$

The Blue Jackets fell behind after taking an early lead against the LA Kings, but lost far more than 2 points when Nick Foligno was injured in a freak play along the Kings bench.

The Blue Jackets started their California trip with a dramatic win over San Jose, were rolled over by the Anaheim Ducks, and looked to right the ship in a matinee game against the LA Kings.

The game started with some unexpected news - while the team got some help on the blue line with the return of Ryan Murray, the forward lines would be without the injured Cam Atkinson, the unexpectedly reassigned Alexander Wennberg, and surprisingly, Matt Calvert, who took the warmups, but left the ice early, apparently suffering a lingering hurt from Friday night's game.

Though head coach Todd Richards spoke out about avoiding a slow start, the Blue Jackets still spent the opening minutes weathering a hard charge from the Kings. Corey Tropp made a move to change things with a booming hit against Justin Williams. Matt Greene took exception to the collision, and after the dust settled, the Jackets were looking at the first power play of the game, with Tropp off for fighting, and Greene receiving a fighting major, instigator minor, and a game misconduct.

Unfortunately, almost before the power play began, Scott Hartnell would get involved in a fracas at the Kings bench, and would be sent off for roughing to even the ice back up.

Despite that early excitement, things were fairly slow until the latter half of the period, when Adam Cracknell drew an interference penalty, sending Drew Doughty off for two minutes.

Early in the power play, Ryan Johansen fired a hard shot in towards the net, which deflected off Scott Hartnell at the top of the crease. Jonathan Quick tried to slide to the left, anticipating a shot, but the rebound went to the right. Tim Erixon pinching down from the point, found the loose puck and fired into the empty net for his first NHL goal.

That goal was the first time the Blue Jackets had scored the first goal in the game going back to the match against Calgary on October 17th, and extended Johansen's point streak to eight games - perhaps the best news of the day, in hindsight.

That 1-0 lead held through the end of the first period, but things changed quickly in the second.

Artem Anisimov was whistled for Goaltender Interference, after being knocked into Quick by an LA defender. It wasn't a very good call, but things got worse less than a minute into the Kings' power play, when Johansen would also be sent off for a hooking penalty.

With the Stanley Cup Champions working a two man advantage, it felt like a matter of time before they scored, and indeed, it wasn't long before Tyler Toffoli took a shot that hit a body in front and drifted into open ice, where Jeff Carter (of course) was able to find the loose puck and send it home.

With the game now 1-1, the Jackets had several prime chances on Quick, starting with a Ryan Johansen breakaway as he came out of the penalty box, but the former Conn Smythe winner was superb, stoning the Johan, then following that up by shutting down a point blank attack from Anisimov, the followup chance from Corey Tropp, and an excellent redirect attempt few minutes later from Hartnell.

The Jackets carried the play through much of the period, keeping up the pressure and forcing Quick to make some impressive saves. So, unsurprisingly, LA would get the tiebreaker.

The "Seventies Line" would factor in here, too. This time, Jeff Carter set up the play by faking a shot that fooled Bob and the Blue Jackets defense, and instead whipping a pin point pass over to Toffoli, who had a wide open net to hit.

It seemed like the goal had barely finished being announced when the Kings were right back at it , and this time it was just...well...screwy.

Dwight King came into the zone on a rush with Justin Wiliams, took a shot, saw the puck fly up into the air off the rebound, batted the rebound out of the air, bounced it off the ice, got the puck under control, and popped it past Bob at a sharp angle to give LA a 3-1 lead.

With just under a minute to go, it looked like Columbus would end the period on the wrong end of a three goal swing, but then Mark Letestu decided to go house, busting through the neutral zone, lining up his shot, and slamming it top corner to give the Jackets a bit of life headed into the second intermission.

The Jackets did, in fact, come out swinging, but didn't find a good answer for Quick in the first few minutes. As their surge of energy ebbed, the Kings responded, but the Columbus defense was ready. It seemed like we were primed for an exciting period - perhaps even with the seeds of a "San Jose" like comeback.

But then...everything changed.

Nick Foligno was battling with Jeff Carter for the puck at the LA bench. Heading into the offensive zone, the two tangled up at the boards. Linesman Shayne Hayer tried to jump up onto the Kings' bench to get out of the way, but instead he would collide with Foligno, sending his head snapping back, and play abruptly stopped as he fell to the ice, motionless.

Jackets' trainer Mike Vogt immediately went to Foligno's side, and moments later additional medical staff was called out from behind the bench.

What had been a fairly noisy, well attended game became utterly silent as players from both teams converged at center ice, waiting for news. After several agonizing minutes, the medical staff positioned Foligno on a stretcher, and began to take him off the ice.

To the roaring applause of the crowd, Foligno was able to raise his hands for a "thumbs up" as he was taken to the medical room, and was seen speaking to the doctors - both extremely encouraging signs.

Team president John Davidson later announced via the TV broadcast that Foligno had feeling and motion in all of his limbs, and was going to be "OK", but it was clear that the team's minds were (quite understandably) not 100% on the game from that point.

Tanner Pearson would put two nails in the coffin, one about a minute after play resumed, and the second a few minutes later, but I cannot blame the Jackets here - after such a painful, emotional shock, and such a scary injury to a friend, it's disrespectful to expect them to be unfeeling robots who somehow pick back up and start playing as if nothing has happened.

The team will fly home, regroup, and recover. There's a rematch with the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday, and perhaps they'll have a few guys back in the lineup.

Tonight, we are glad to hear that Foligno's injury was not as serious as it originally appeared, and wish him a speedy recovery. Everything else is just background noise.

Optional Skate Updates: Calvert to IR, Foligno Update, Boone Skates!

The Blue Jackets held an optional skate this afternoon, which lead to quite a few roster updates, including the recall of Alexander Wennberg from Springfield, and the announcement that Matt Calvert has been placed on Injured Reserve.

We'll start with the really good news from today's practice, as reported by the Dispatch's Shawn Mitchell: Nick Foligno's x-rays showed no structural damage to his neck, and while he's sore, he's not suffering any other effects from the "stinger". He's having an MRI done today, and if cleared to play, he would like to get back into the lineup for tomorrow's game against Ottawa.

Update: Fox Sports Ohio's Rick Gethin has posted video of Foligno answering questions about yesterday, and his hopes to get back to business.

The news about Matt Calvert, on the other hand, isn't as positive - after leaving the warmup yesterday and being ruled out of the game vs. LA, the club has announced that they are putting the energetic forward on the IR retroactive to last Friday with an upper body injury. He is expected to miss around a week, so it's possible he might be ready to go against Toronto on the 31st, but just as likely that he may not make an appearance until the following game in New Jersey, or perhaps even next Tuesday's game against Carolina.

Another player injured in that game, Cam Atkinson, took the practice today and looks to be back to normal. He also told the media that he plans to play against Ottawa, so that will give the team a little of their firepower back. Also returning to the lineup will be Alexander Wennberg, who was "recalled" back to the club. (Technically, he never actually left, but what's a little paper shuffling between friends?)

The last major piece of news coming out of today's skate is that Boone Jenner joined several teammates, skating, shooting, and stickhandling. He went under the knife for his broken hand back on October 1st, and was likely to miss six weeks. If he's coming along a little ahead of schedule, that's a huge boost to the lineup on and off the ice.

It couldn't come at a better time.

Bobrovsky out 1-2 weeks with broken finger

The Jackets shocked everyone this morning by announcing that Sergei Bobrovsky broke a finger in practice yesterday, and will miss 1-2 weeks.

If it wasn't for bad luck, the Blue Jackets wouldn't have any luck at all this season.

On the heels of Cam Atkinson's frightening near miss and Nick Foligno's shocking injury on Sunday, now Sergei Bobrovsky is going to miss 1-2 weeks of game action. Why? Because he broke a finger sometime during yesterday's optional practice.

Curtis McElhinney will take the reins while he's out, and Anton Forsberg has been brought back up from Springfield to back him up during that time.

It's worth remembering that the team was in a similar situation - worse, in fact - when Bob suffered a groin injury last season, and they found ways to win. C-Mac will be relied on to step up, and the team in front of him is going to need to play hard and play sharp, but they've done it before.

It's also worth pointing out that in that 1-2 week timeline the team will face Toronto, Carolina (twice!), Jersey, and the Lightning after today's game against Ottawa. Not teams to take lightly, but not a murderer's row either.

Still, it's one more piece of frustrating, inexplicable, what the hell just happened news, which seems to be the theme so far for the 2014-2015 season.

Dear Hockey Gods: Would you please quit it?

The Jackets return home after a tough road trip, only to find their goalie fractured his finger at practice. The Senators are in town and the CBJ will be looking for some revenge.

Ottawa Senators at Columbus Blue Jackets

Nationwide Arena - Columbus, Ohio
Radio - WBNS 97.1 - TV - Fox Sports Ohio
Opponent's Blog: Silver Seven

The Blue Jackets return home to Nationwide Arena tonight battered, bruised, cut up, you name it.  The CBJ finished off their California road trip 1-2-0 (1-3-0 on the whole road trip if you throw in the Ottawa game prior to Cali) and with some injuries to boot.  As if that wasn't enough, Sergei Bobrovsky apparently fractured his finger in practice on Monday and is out a week or two.

It looks like Curtis McElhinney will make his second start of the season with Anton Forsberg serving as his backup.  You will recall CMac's first start, against these very Senators, did not end well as Nick Foligno plowed into him as he was trying to stop a cross-ice pass.  McElhinney ended up with a neck/head injury and went on IR for a week.

Back to Foligno - after suffering a "stinger" on Sunday in L.A., Nick was hoping to get cleared to play tonight despite some lingering stiffness.  He was not at the morning skate, and would appear to be out tonight.  Meanwhile, Matt Calvert is on IR for roughly a week.  Cam Atkinson is due back tonight after taking a skate to the face in Anaheim on Friday, and apparently will not wear a special visor or cage.  The usual suspects are still out - Horton, Jenner, and Dubinsky.  With Foligno likely out, that will make six of the top nine forwards who have missed time this season already.  Lovely.  Can't wait to see the "Man Games Lost" stat in a month.

On defense, Ryan Murray returned against the Kings.  Shawn Mitchell is reporting from the morning skate that Tim Erixon and Cody Goloubef will be the scratches, meaning Dalton Prout is in.  I know Todd Richards likes his righty/lefty combos but I would prefer to see Jack Johnson back with Fedor Tyutin, which would leave a Wiz/Murray pair and Prout and Savard as the 3rd pairing.  Of course, if you don't like that just wait a few shifts as it will inevitably change.

Ryan Johansen comes into tonight's game with points in all eight contests so far this season (5-6-11).  Scott Hartnell is tied for the league-lead in assists with nine.  They will likely anchor the top line again and be joined by Cam Atkinson with Foligno out.  The remaining lines will probably be shuffled throughout the game as it's an "all hands on deck" situation right now.

Tonight is the start of a stretch of eight games against Eastern Conference opponents in 18 days.  Five of those games will come against Metro Division opponents.  After a rough road trip, the Jackets could sorely use a win right now.  And somebody better be there to hug Bobrovsky...I mean Foligno...crap.  Just win and hug everyone, please.

I should have mentioned - Dan is utilizing the press pass tonight and will be taking care of the recap.  So I am taking a stab at the preview for him.  Here is my best guess at the lines:

Game 8 preview: Ottawa Senators @ Lumbus Blue Jackets

A preview of the game between the Ottawa Senators and #Lumbus Blue Jackets on 28 October 2014.

Brace for impact, here comes Jared Cowen. After being a healthy scratch for the previous five games, Cowen will return to the lineup for the first time since 11 October when the Senators visit #Lumbus tonight. Patrick Wiercioch will be scratched to make room for Cowen. Mike Hoffman and Colin Greening will also be healthy scratches and will be replaced by Curtis Lazar and Mark Stone.

Here are the lines and pairings for the Senators from Dean Brown. Robin Lehner will start.

Ottawa

MacArthur - Turris - Ryan
Michalek - Zibanejad - Chiasson
Smith - Legwand - Neil
Condra - Lazar - Stone

Phillips - Karlsson
Cowen - Ceci
Borowiecki - Gryba

Lehner (starter)
Anderson

Here are the lines and pairings for #Lumbus from their website.

Lumbus

Atkinson - Johansen - Hartnell
Tropp - Anisimov - Dano
Wennberg - Letestu - Skille
Boll - Chaput - Cracknell

Savard - Tyutin
Johnson - Prout
Murray - Wisniewski

McElhinney (starter)
Forsberg

Some notes for tonight:

  • For the fourth time in five games, the Senators will play a backup goaltender. Against Colorado, the backup got injured and Ottawa ended up playing against the third string goaltender. Against Lumbus, the backup was again injured and the starter came back in. Against Chicago they played the third string goalie the entire game. Tonight the two goalies are second and third on the depth chart with Sergei Bobrovsky injured.
  • In addition to Bobrovsky, the Blue Jackets will also be without Nick Foligno, Matt Calvert, Brandon Dubinsky, Nathan Horton, and Boone Jenner.
  • Mike Hoffman being scratched is rather puzzling, especially as Lumbus had no answer for him just 10 days ago. But this is Paul MacLean we are talking about here.
  • Patrick Wiercioch being scratched is disappointing but also not surprising. Wiercioch struggled somewhat against Chicago, but certainly brings far more than the likes of Eric Gryba and especially Mark Borowiecki. But they keep it simple, so there is that.
  • For whatever reason, the one person Erik Karlsson cannot seem to play well with is Chris Phillips. MacLean only seems to try this when the team is trailing so it is hard to judge, but Wiercioch has done very in extremely small samples on the top pairing both this year and last.
  • The defence has been a tire fire, but that was to be expected. What has been more disappointing is that the Senators aren't generating a lot of shots themselves. The loss of Jason Spezza hurts in that regard, but so far it hasn't resulted in any defensive improvements.
  • Despite all that, the Senators are 4-2-1. They don't deserve to be, but they are. That's points in the bank. Allowing 40 shots in three out of seven games is not going to help in maintaining that. They can't expect to win two out of three when allowing 40 shots.
  • Erik Karlsson's points streak ended at five games but he added another five shots. He has 35 of the Senators 208 shots this season and is now seventh in the league in shots and third in shots per game.
  • Ottawa isn't going to go too far if they are getting under 50% of the 5-on-5 attempts even with Karlsson on the ice. They are getting 49.46% of the attempts with Karlsson on and only 41.14% with Karlsson off the ice. He's done well to drag them up but the rest of the team is getting annihilated.
  • Alex Chiasson continues to look like a very solid acquisition. He showed great patience to set up that goal for Milan Michalek in Chicago.
  • The Senators have taken 37 minor penalties so far this season. Mark Borowiecki and Eric Gryba have taken 11 of those 37.
  • Ottawa is 3-0-1 against the eastern conference with wins against Tampa Bay, Florida, Lumbus and an overtime loss against New Jersey.
