Silver Nuggets: Who's your most improved Sens player?

$
0
0

Hi folks! The question-and-answer type Nuggets from a couple of weeks ago worked well, so I decided to do that again for today and Tuesday!

The Senators currently find themselves occupying the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, with 20 points in 16 games. Though there are still some concerns with respect to defensive play, there have been many bright spots on the team. My question to you all this week is:

In your eyes, which Senators player has improved the most this season and why? How do you think they have made this improvement (development, used in the right situations, no longer injured, etc.)?

This poses a really interesting question in terms of how we conceptualize 'improvement' as well. Is the "most improved" player someone like Curtis Lazar, who went from being a junior-level player to an NHL-level player? Is it Mike Hoffman, who has translated his AHL play into NHL play after three seasons of development? Is it Jared Cowen, who is no longer a disaster every time he steps on the ice? The discussion around which type of scenario lends itself to best defining "most improved" is interesting to me.

Let us know in the poll and the comments!

Game Preview #16 - Hartsy's Return To Avoid 10

Scott Hartnell goes back to Philly, and the Jackets look to snap their 9-game winless streak. It's time, guys.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Philadelphia Flyers

First and foremost, WTF? The Flyers have not played since Saturday. Travel, you might ask? Nope. This is their fourth straight home game. They've had SIX. DAYS. OFF.

That can work both ways, I suppose. They've been playing well, and sometimes a long layoff can sap some of the mojo from a hot team. It may bring legs not quite up to game speed. Conversely, however, it may bring a really, really rested team bent on destruction of a wounded, fragile, and struggling team.

Fun times, no?

At any rate, this game is Scott Hartnell's first return to Philly since the trade, and in honor of the moment out friends over at BSH remembered his five best moments as a Flyer. To say that Hartsy has been one of the Jackets' best and most consistent players would be an understatement. As the lineup has crumbled due to injury, Hartnell is one of the few guys who hasn't missed a game, and is playing at a near-point-per-game pace with 5/9/14 in 15 games. With all the chaos around him, maybe we can finally say it wasn't Giroux, eh?

Sadly, though Artem Anisimov and Sergei Bobrovsky traveled with the team, neither is going to be able to play tonight. Matt Calvert and Jack Skille did not make the trip. All that means--you guessed it--the same forward lines as Tuesday. I'll give you a moment to force the bile back down your throats.

Good?

OK. Of note, however, is that Jack Johnson does return tonight and should at least give a tiny bit more legitimacy in the place of Fredric St. Denis.

The Flyers started out 1-3-2 in their first six, but have come on lately to win six of eight, and they are in a stretch of six of eight at home. Coincidence? Nope. They've been very good at home, Steve Mason's bitching about the lights notwithstanding.

I don't even know how to try to prescribe wins for this team anymore. Stay out of the box? Score goals? Stop getting lit up on defense? How much can we really break this down anymore?

If that doesn't get you fired up, I don't know what will.

Blues Trade Defenseman Jordan Leopold To Blue Jackets

$

The defenseman has been in the press box for most of the season.

This wasn't a surprise aside from the fact that it took so long - the Blues've dealt defenseman Jordan Leopold to the Columbus Blue Jackets for CBJ's fifth round pick in 2016. Not a huge return for the Blues, but also not a bad deal for the Blue Jackets. The Jackets finally snapped their nine game losing streak last night, but they need some help on the blue line. The Blues aren't playing Leopold - they've put all of their eggs in Ian Cole's basket.

Leopold isn't a large scoring threat - his eight points in 49 games with the Blues shows that. He has also been injured, and saw his ice time dwindle with Ian Cole's improvement. Cole has no points in 16 games played this season, but defensively signs of improvement are there. Aside from Kevin Shattenkirk, the Blues' defense as a whole could use some scoring improvement.

Just getting a fifth round pick in the 2016 draft seems like this is a throw-away trade for the Blues. You get the feeling that they wanted to clear up some space, and that they didn't want Leopold to just sit. It's a good move for Leopold as far as time on ice goes; the Jackets, however, have a large uphill battle to deal with. For their sake I hope that Leopold helps.

The Blues will be recalling Chris Butler to be the seventh guy. This is a blow for the Wolves' defense, as he's their top guy with eight assists and a goal.

Game Preview #17 - BOB. IS. BACK.

First and foremost, Bob is back. This is good. Also, it appears that Artem Anisimov is back as well. That said, all is not good in Russian injury news, as Fedor Tyutin has gone to the IR list with a knee sprain and looks to be out four to six weeks. Because OF COURSE HE IS.

The Jackets also put Matt Calvert on IR as well, but getting Anisimov back will make that relatively moot. The Jackets also went out and grabbed Jordan Leopold from the Blues for a fifth round pick. The Blues are even eating some of his salary. So, there's that.

Columbus has to be feeling a bit better after finally getting a win and knowing that they're going to have some more stability in net with Bobrovsky back. That said, losing Tyutin just hurts. It hurts this defense almost immeasurably.

Thankfully, while the Sharks are a good team, they haven't exactly been lighting it up of late, going just 5-7-1 in their last 13 games after starting off 4-0-1. They're a bit of an enigma, having played one of their best games of the season in beating Tampa Bay the other night... after having gotten smoked by the Panthers (!). They also sport a loss to Buffalo on their record, not to mention the comeback by Columbus last time they met.

The Jackets did almost all of their damage on the Power Play last night, and that's a good sign. It's the one time during these games when they are able to match up talent-wise. That said, the PK continues to struggle mightily, and losing Tyutin will only hurt there. That said, hopefully Bob brings a bit of a calming influence there. That said, the PK can't continue to hemorrhage goals like this if the Jackets want to get back into it.

Leopold comes to Columbus as a bit of an unknown this season, having played in just seven games. He has no points, has a +/- of 0, and just two PIMs. That said, he actually has a very good EV Corsi On number of 12.70, though his QualCom numbers are very low (meaning he's doing that against weak competition). Who cares... a 12.70 EV Corsi On would be the best of the Jackets' defense by over three (Wisniewski leads the team at 9.43 currently). So, in summary, Leopold is hardly "a warm body" and is definitely better than an AHL option. How quickly he can fit in will tell the tale of how helpful--or harmful--he can be.

Blue Jackets Acquire Jordan Leopold

$
0
0

Faced with yet another injury, this time to their most consistent defenseman, the Blue Jackets reached out to the St. Louis Blues for help.

In a deal announced earlier this morning, Columbus has acquired defenseman Jordan Leopold from the St. Louis Blues, in exchange for a 5th Round draft pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Leopold, 34 years old, was in his third year with the Blues. He appeared in seven games this season, registering no points, two penalty minutes and an even plus/minus rating.   His best recent campaigns came in 2010-11 and 2011 - 12 campaigns for the Buffalo Sabres, appearing in 150 games over that span, with 23 goals and 36 assists.  A Minnesota native, he is listed at 6'1" and 206 lbs.

The deal comes on the heels of yet another significant injury to the Columbus roster.  Reliable blue-liner Fedor Tyutin went down with a knee injury after colliding with Jakub Voracek in Friday night's 4 - 3 Blue Jackets win over the Flyers.  Tyutin was place on IR Saturday, and is expected to miss 4 - 6 weeks.

Leopold is expected to make his Columbus debut tonight against San Jose, a game that will also feature the return of Sergei Bobrovsky return to the lineup.

Sharks vs. Blue Jackets preview: Officer Bobrovsky is back on the force

Columbus' starting goaltender returns to their lineup to face San Jose.

No team in the league has suffered more key injuries this season than the Blue Jackets, the Sharks' opponent tonight in Columbus. Predicted by many to build on their second postseason appearance in franchise history, during which they gave the division-winning Pittsburgh Penguins a legitimate scare, the losses of Nathan Horton (whose career might tragically be over), Brandon Dubinsky, James Wisniewski, Ryan Murray, Boone Jenner, Artem Anisimov and now Fedor Tyutin for parts of the early season have derailed those plans. But their most significant injury was the fractured finger starting goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky sustained in practice more than two weeks ago. Columbus hadn't won a game without the former Vezina Trophy winner in net until last night in Philadelphia. Activated from IR yesterday, Bobrovsky makes his return to the Jackets' crease tonight against a Sharks team he helped defeat in October.

Last Meeting

In the Sharks' first game back home after their initial five-game Eastern road trip they held leads of 2-0 and 4-3 against the Blue Jackets but ended up losing on a last-minute deflection goal by Mark Letestu. Ryan Johansen had a two-goal night, as did Letestu who also scored a shorthanded goal.

Storylines

  • Along with Bobrovsky, center Artem Anisimov also makes his return to the Blue Jackets lineup tonight after missing seven games with a concussion.
  • The injury-plagued Jackets also made a trade with St. Louis this morning, acquiring veteran defenseman Jordan Leopold in exchange for a fifth-round pick to add some experience to their blueline.
  • By all indications, the Sharks are sticking with the same lines and defense pairings that earned them a 2-1 win in Tampa. Unsurprisingly, with Stalock still hurt, Niemi will get the start in net.

Game 17 Recap: Calm Blue Jackets Edge Sharks 2 - 1

$

0

The Blue Jackets welcomed two old friends and one new face to the lineup on Saturday. They all had an impact as Columbus swept the season series from San Jose.

They're getting the band back together, and that should be music to every Columbus Blue Jacket fan's ears.  Sergei Bobrovsky and Artem Anisimov returned to the ice after what seemed like an eternal absence, and Jordan Leopold made his Columbus debut.  They all played key roles in a tight, hard fought contest that brought the Blue Jackets their second consecutive victory.

Period One -- Setting the Tone

The Blue Jackets came out hard in this one, featuring slight line adjustments.  Speedy Brian Gibbons joined Ryan Johansen and Nick Foligno on the presumptive first line, while Boone Jenner centered Scott Hartnell and Cam Atkinson.  Artem Anisimov filled the center slot between Alexander Wennberg and Adam Cracknell, with Corey Tropp, Michael Chaput and Jared Boll.  While there was some predictable raggedness from the shifting roles, what emerged was an intriguing blend of speed, skill and tenacity, and each of those traits came into play as the night wore on.

As was true all night, the first period featured a considerable amount of time fought in the neutral zone and within a few paces of the clubs' respective blue lines.  There were occasional flurries of activity in each offensive zone, but both Antti Niemi and Sergei Bobrovsky were more than up to the task.  For the most part, there was little time or space in which to operate, and the 15,950 assembled at Nationwide Arena settled in for what promised to be a low scoring affair from the outset.

Three themes quickly emerged for the Blue Jackets.  First, Sergei Bobrovsky is truly something special.  He was always in position, managed his rebounds and provided the calm, secure backdrop that this team has so desperately needed over the course of the recent unpleasantness.   Second, Artem Anisimov came in and did all of those little things -- and big things -- that make him far more valuable than the scoresheet will often reflect.  He won 64% of his face-offs, spurring similar performances by Ryan Johansen (63%) and Boone Jenner (62%).  Michael Chaput trailed with "only"50% in the circle.  This was a massive reversal of recent trends, and served the club well all night.  Finally, Jordan Leopold did precisely what the club bargained for -- and more -- when they sent a 2016 5th round pick to St. Louis earlier in the day for the veteran defenseman.  Despite hurriedly catching a plane to Columbus and stepping on the ice in unfamiliar surroundings, Leopold provided the quietly competent defensive play the Blue Jackets needed, efficiently dispatching threats with little ceremony.  The collective impact was to provide an obvious sense of confidence that built as the game progressed.

It was not surprising, then, that Columbus was first on the board.  Anisimov took the puck between the circles in his own zone, and confidently skated it up the ice, ultimately surrendering it to Adam Cracknell at the top of the face-off circle in the offensive zone.  Cracknell made a nice spin move and centered the puck, causing turmoil in front of Niemi.  He then nudged the puck out to David Savard at the top of the right circle, who slammed the puck home through traffic for his fourth of the campaign.  1 - 0 Blue Jackets, with Cracknell and Anisimov picking up well-deserved assists.

The first period ended with the Blue Jackets on the power play (which they would not convert), and a virtually even shot distribution, with the Sharks holding an 11 - 10 edge.

Period 2 --  Punch & Counterpunch

The second period proved tighter than the first.  San Jose managed a 10 - 8 shot advantage for the period, but much of the first half of the period was again fought at center ice.  Both netminders managed the crease, the defensemen kept the shooting lanes clear, and the forwards were, for the most part, frustrated.

The two teams swapped power play chances in the middle of the frame, with neither able to convert.  However, at the 15:14 mark, Ryan Johansen drew an interference penalty through old fashioned hard work, and the Blue Jackets would find the back of the net again.  David Savard brought the puck up the ice with speed, and Boone Jenner continued the momentum once the zone was entered, and centered the puck to a crowd in front.  Jack Johnson wasn't able to steer it in the net, but managed to deflect it across the crease, where a hustling Cam Atkinson found it and beat Niemi for a 2 - 0 lead.  Johnson and Jenner collected the assists, and the home crowd was humming.

Unfortunately, the Blue Jackets then experienced their one true stretch of bad play on this evening.  After gaining the two goal lead, they started playing as if they just wanted to get back to the locker room for a rest.  The Sharks were not biting however, and stepped up the pressure.  Suddenly, there was too much time and space for the San Jose attackers, and Joe Pavelski found the puck on his stick deep in the Columbus zone.  He channeled his inner Nick Foligno as he patiently drifted at the left side of the right circle.  Eventually, he launched a high wrister past the helpless Bobrovsky, with just 55 seconds left in the period.  The dreaded "goal in the last minute of a period", and the sense of trepidation that crept through the crowd was palpable.

Period 3 -- Escalating Drama

Of course, as the final period began, nobody knew that the final outcome had already been determined.  However, the lack of scoring in the third does not mean there was a lack of drama.  Quite the contrary.

The Blue Jackets learned from their end-of-period lapse in the 2nd, and came out strong, seemingly drawing more and more confidence from the play of Bobrovsky, Anisimov and others.  The fact that the final shot total for the period was 16 - 10 in favor of the Sharks does not reflect the realities of the period.  Again, the play was tight, and the Blue Jackets created several solid opportunities. Johansen and Atkinson each had breakaways, denied by Niemi.  Johansen's created some significant consternation, when he appeared to catch a skate on Niemi's equipment, and crashed hard into the boards.  Nobody breathed as he slowly gathered himself.  However, he seemed no worse for the wear, and finished the game on a normal shift schedule.

What was already a tense affair became excruciating at the 15:00 mark.  Alexander Wennberg took a four minute high sticking penalty against Scott Hannan, and Columbus was suddenly faced with the daunting task of a major penalty kill with the game on the line.  A week ago, the team would have found a way to lose this one.  But not on this night.  The Blue Jackets were relentless on the penalty kill, clearing the pucks, blocking shots, and denying San Jose any easy chances. What opportunities did arise were snuffed with alacrity by Sergei Bobrovsky, including a particularly delicious save on a prime chance from Tommy WIngels.

San Jose pulled Niemi with 1:30 left in regulation, and the crowd was on its feet.  With half a minute of 6-on-4 advantage, the Sharks could not convert.  The Blue Jackets reversed their recent tendency to collapse toward the net, seemingly understanding that Bobrovsky had their collective backs. They challenged the puck and got it out of the zone quickly. After a face-off outside the zone with just eight seconds left, San Jose simply ran out of time.  All that remained was the much-missed Foligno/Bobrovsky hug, and the Blue Jackets had the season sweep of the team in aqua.  The fans stayed put through the three stars announcements, and to say it was a transformed environment would be a massive understatement.

Takeaways

You could not watch this one without concluding that this team simply plays better with Sergei Bobrovsky in net.  They have confidence, challenge the puck and play with much more speed and decisiveness.  Bobrovsky was amazing in this one, and the comparisons with Curtis McElhinney could not be avoided.  Where McElhinney is reactive and jerky, Bobrovsky is smooth and anticipatory.  He has an almost surreal ability to see the play and be where the play is going to be before it gets there.

Having the calming presence of Jordan Leopold and Artem Anisimov also seemed to help the rest of the roster. Johansen and Foligno buzzed all night.  Atkinson had a great effort.  Weinberg was solid, and Adam Cracknell seemed to respond to his elevation in the lineup.

On a night when every other Metropolitan Division lost  -- except for Pittsburgh (who beat the Rangers) -- the Blue Jackets could rightly enjoy the two points, and wins in both halves of the back to back.  The Red Wings and Bruins come calling this week, and the club makes a repeat visit to Philadelphia.  Big challenges, but big opportunities as well.  Tonight, for the first time in quite a while, the club looked like it is more than ready to grasp those opportunities.

Injuries aren't an excuse. Or are they?

Note: This was written before the Blue Jackets managed to win the last two games, improving their record to 6-10-1. Regardless, the team remains in the bottom three of the NHL standings, and I feel these questions are still valid. Not trying to be a buzzkill as this team looks to turn a corner, but since we're not out of the woods yet, the following will be unedited to reflect any current positive feelings.

Here's the thing: It's hard to write about this team right now. The injuries are unbelievable. While the team has done their best to not use them as an excuse, they certainly are a great explanation as to the team's struggles.

Although there are some very clear reasons as to why this team is sitting at the bottom of the NHL standings - again - there are a few things that bother me with how this team got here, injuries notwithstanding.

Todd Richards has been stubbornly hanging onto the idea that this team can play dump and chase, bump and bang hockey with Alexander Wennberg and Tim Erixon and Michael Chaput in prominent roster spots. At a certain point, the coach has to adjust his game plan when the personnel doesn't match the playbook, doesn't he?

Jarmo Kekalainen has made some good moves - Scott Hartnell for R.J. Umberger is highway robbery, no doubt about it. But he's also been frustratingly willing to let guys go out there who are in over their head. Wennberg is going to be an outstanding player one day. Today is not that day. Even though Jarmo and John Davidson repeatedly state they're building this team brick-by-brick, the right way, and that no roster spots will be handed out... it sure looks like Wennberg's draft status earned him a seat at the big boy table, doesn't it?

Why not bring a backup goalie in on a tryout to push Curtis McElhinney? It's been painfully obvious for awhile now that McElhinney just isn't a great backup that the team can have faith in. Or what about a veteran to split the time in Springfield instead of relying on two very young goaltenders to carry the load?

Why get stingy with contracts and money for Derek MacKenzie when Jared Boll gets a comfy contract and a guaranteed (not earned) roster spot? If the argument is that Boll provides leadership, and energy, and grit, and is respected in the locker room, guess what? That could also describe MacKenzie, a player who's valuable in many situations, including on the penalty kill (and with the team currently ranked 25th out of 30, they could sure use him).

If this team hadn't claimed Jack Skille from waivers or been the benefactor of the Flyers' itchy trade finger, where would they be right now?

And why, year after year, is it supposed to be a good thing that this team is the youngest roster in the league? Veterans matter. I get the feeling that this team is waiting for the stars to align in some magical 3-5 year period. But what happens if Hartnell, Nick Foligno, Ryan Johansen, and others are playing their best hockey now? You can't just keep peeling off veterans and tasking young guys to step up. No matter how good he may be one day, Wennberg is not ready to step up right now. The apparent lack of understanding of that fact is troubling to me.

I have more questions than answers. It'd be nice if it didn't seem like the guys in charge had more questions than answers.

Truthfully, I don't blame any one person. I certainly don't believe Kekalainen or Richards should be fired. If this team had half as many injuries, they'd likely be in a playoff position. But I still can't shake the feeling that some of these moves - or non-moves - are curious.

This team should have a bright future. Enough prospects are on the way. Even if this year is a season of bottoming out, it'll likely be short-lived, maybe even similar to the '06-'07/'07-'08 Flyers, missing the playoffs only to make a run to the Eastern Conference Finals the next season.

Yet, I'm still left scratching my head. How did we get here?

Your weekly look at individual Washington Capitals' ups and downs:

GoaliesTrendNotes
Braden Holtbyhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngFaced 54 shots in his two appearances and turned aside all but three of them, none of which were particularly good goals and one that was entirely on him. And therein lies the story of the season for Holtby so far. When he's been good, he's been very, very good, and when he's been bad, well... this happens.
Justin Petershttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217737/down.pngWasn't particularly solid against the Blues (although given the way his team started the game, one could argue he was the reason they weren't down by more than one after the first period), and even threw in a Holtby-esque turnover of his own to keep things interesting. Because we needed something to do that.
Defensemen
Karl Alznerhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngGot absolutely undressed by Jaden Schwartz on the Blues' second goal Saturday night, but had an otherwise quiet week
John Carlsonhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngDidn't pick up a point in any of the three games (the first time he's gone at least three games this season without getting on the scoresheet), and that's not great considering the team was struggling to score. On the flip side, however, he was only on for two goals-against - and both of them were goalie blunders.
John Erskinehttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/538577/ow.pngHas entered the first stage of rehab after having surgery on his neck, but there doesn't seem to be a timetable for his return.
Mike Greenhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngPicked up two assists on the week, one on the power play and one at even strength, which moves him into a multi-player tie for 7th-best among NHL defensemen. That's all well and good, but after a torrid start to the season, he's now gone three and a half weeks without a goal.
Jack Hillenhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngWith 16 straight games as a healthy scratch (and counting), have to wonder what the plan is for Hillen if and when Dmitry Orlov comes back...
Matt Niskanenhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngHad a little bit of trouble in front of his own net late in the second period Tuesday night, which translated into Columbus's second goal, but like Alzner had a relatively quiet week...other than that crushing body check he took from teammate Tom Wilson Saturday night, of course. Ouch.
Dmitry Orlovhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/538577/ow.pngIs on the road with the boys and skating, which is good, and perhaps that conditioning stint with Hershey isn't too far off? Maybe? Possibly?
Brooks Orpikhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngAs was the case with his defensive partner, Orpik's only goals-against blemishes were pretty much entirely the fault of his netminders - and he actually posted the team's best Corsi rating in the loss to New Jersey on Friday night, which was something of a surprise. Y'know, in between having the team's lowest Corsi in Tuesday's and Saturday's games.
Nate Schmidthttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.pngFinally got on the scoresheet with an assist on Tuesday night... and then followed it up with his second assist of the season two games later.
Forwards
Nicklas Backstromhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngHis two assists Tuesday night give him 12 on the season, which leads the team by a healthy margin (and puts him in a tie with Ovechkin with 16 points). He followed that up with two pointless games, but we know Backstrom never goes quiet for too long... and it's not like he doesn't have other stuff on his mind right now.
Jay Beaglehttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngHad a pretty decent return to the top line (relatively speaking) Tuesday night with a beauty of an assist on Ovechkin's second goal, followed it up with an inconspicuous outing against the Devils... and then was mercifully returned to his rightful place on the fourth line for Saturday's loss to the Blues.
Troy Brouwerhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngHis assist on Johansson's first goal against the Jackets was beautiful in an ugly sort of way, as he won the battle in the slot to get the puck to his linemate however he could. A nice, hard-working way to get a point.
Andre Burakovskyhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.pngPicked up two assists on Tuesday night (moving him into a tie for second place among rookie scorers) and was given some time on the top line on Friday in an attempt to spark the team's offense - a sign of just how much confidence his coach has in him right now.
Jason Chimerahttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217737/down.pngWhatever magic he and Ward generated last year seems to have run out, as Chimera is two weeks removed from his last point - and is stuck on two total for the year. Add in the fact that he continues to rack up the penalties (with another two minors this week), and the start of the season is not going all that well for Chimera.
Eric Fehrhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngQuiet, quiet week for Fehr... but hey, at least he played in all three games. Hooray?
Marcus Johanssonhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.pngAdded two more goals to his already impressive numbers to start the season, as he, Burakovsky and Brouwer continue to form one of the team's more consistent trios. He's now not only tied for the team lead in that department with eight, but also leads all Caps with seven even-strength goals (and is tied with a handful of others for the fourth most in the League).
Evgeny Kuznetsovhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngNo points, but decent possession numbers and some power-play time would imply that he'll be on the scoresheet more often in the future... that is, if he can just get some decent linemates.
Brooks Laichhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/538577/ow.pngEarlier this week, GM Brian MacLellannoted that the Caps need to "quit doing these false starts" with Laich - he needs to be 100%, or not play. Hear, hear.
Michael Lattahttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngContinues to provide little bursts of energy on the fourth line, and wasn't on for any goals-against this week (although he did get run around a bit, possession-wise). All in all, he's doing what's asked but not much else.
Liam O'Brienhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/538577/ow.pngThat lower-body injury seems to be lingering a little bit. Not great news for him, but hopefully he'll be healthy and back in the lineup soon enough... the Hershey lineup, that is.
Alex Ovechkinhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngSnapped a three-game goalless streak with a pair of goals against the Blue Jackets... and promptly started a new streak in the two games that followed. It's been a bit of a bumpy start for the captain, who has yet to find a consistent scoring touch this year.
Aaron Volpattihttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/538577/ow.pngMet with a specialist about his neck and will meet up with the team in Arizona and then... who knows?
Joel Wardhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.pngHis seeing-eye goal that dribbled through Brian Elliott Saturday night was the Caps' lone tally of the game, and snapped a three-game pointless streak for Ward.
Tom Wilsonhttp://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.pngAfter missing the first two games of the week with that nagging lower-body injury, Wilson returned to the lineup - and the top line - against the Blues, and was easily the best player on the ice for the Caps. Granted, that's a low bar, but his feistiness and willingness to stick up for his linemates earned him special praise from his coach (and from us). Now if he can get his offensive talents to shine through as much as that pugilistic nature...watch out.

6-10-1: Can History Repeat Itself?

$

The Jackets have won two in a row and find themselves at the same record through 17 games as last season. Can they again make a playoff run?

The Blue Jackets are 6-10-1 through 17 games, thanks to two straight wins. They are 7th in the Metro, and are technically five points behind the 3rd place team in the Metro. They are 14th in the East.

Last year, on November 12, the Jackets lost in overtime to Washington to move to 6-10-1 through 17 games. At that time, they were 8th in the division, and 14th in the East, and were five points behind the 3rd place team in the Metro.

Woah.

So, if you're scoring at home, as bad as this team has been of late battling through injuries and ineffectiveness, they are in the exact same spot they were one year ago. To. The. Letter.

Obviously, the two squads took very different paths to get to where they found themselves through 17 games. The biggest difference? This team is going to get better. They've already started to get healthy again, and have made a move to help solidify their blue line while they wait. But, they could be getting as many as three more forwards back this week to a team that already looks more confident with Sergei Bobrovsky back from (freak) injury.

So, let's take a look at what this year's Jackets need to do to match last year's Jackets.

First and foremost, last year's team went 37-22-6 over their final 65 games to finish 43-32-7 (93 pts). If we think 93 points would be good enough (I tend to), there's your benchmark right there. So, in short, it's been done before and thus can be done again.

But, let's look at the next few weeks. Columbus didn't get over .500 until mid-January last season. Think about that for a second. It wasn't until early into the eight-game winning streak that the Jackets finally got to 21-20-4. That was the third win in their streak, and was their fourth win in five January games. So, let's make that the benchmark to shoot for first.

The Jackets need to go 15-10-3 in 28 games to get to that mark. Remember another thing: last December, they were without Bobrovsky for literally all but one half of a game of their 13 games. Yes, he could get injured again, but we can't make those kinds of predictions. Also, karma. Please. No more injuries.

This Jackets club as it currently looks is a lot closer to the unit that started 4-2-0 than it is the unit that went 0-8-1. They're poised to get Brandon Dubinsky, Matt Calvert, and Jack Skille back sometime in the next week or so. Mark Letestu should not be too far behind.

If we break the remaining season into quarters, we're left with four 16.25 game stretches. We'll just call them 16 game stretches for the sake of easier math. The Jackets basically need 80 points, or 20 points per 16-game stretch. That would mean they'd need to go something like 9-5-2 over each stretch.

That seems pretty reasonable, doesn't it? They were 4-2-0 in their first six before things went completely to hell. Could the team--without the injuries--have gone 5-3-2 over their next 10? I think so.

Of course, it's up to the team to prove it, and it certainly depends on how healthy they can get, and how long those guys are able to stay healthy. This team can handle one or two key injuries, but not the seven or eight that we've had.

Nothing is given, and those points must be earned. But, I think last year showed this team has the capability--when healthy--to play well enough to get back into it. It's only a matter of whether or not they can repeat history.

An interview with Jarmo, some notes from around the league, and Voracek has moved on from his trade.

WOOOO TWO WINS IN A ROW THIS WEEKEND.  WE'RE GOING STREAKING (hopefully).

Time for some links this fine, snowy (depending on where you are) day:

  • FSO snagged a one-on-one interview with GM Jarmo Kekalainen.  Interesting to note that the two biggest FAs in 2015 are everyone's favorite huggers.  Offers have been made, but no progress.  If Foligno keeps up his pace, you should see his next contract at around $5 million+ AAV, if not more.  Bob wants to paid like an elite goalie, while the speculation here is that management sees him in that tier right below.  Either way, expect a raise and the remainder of the season will serve as a bit of a bargaining chip.
  • Josh Cooper (Puck Daddy) thinks Columbus should "tank," or would at least benefit greatly from landing one of McDavid or Eichel at the 2015 Draft (the team would turn into a "juggernaut," he says).  The season is only 17 games in, let's pump the brakes on the tank talk.  I put out the necessary win percentage to get into the postseason and of course, the team responded with two wins.  Only 81 more points to go (and 65 games remaining).  Back-to-back playoff appearances are much better for this franchise than landing a top two pick, in my opinion.  UPDATE - Ryan Lambert, also of Puck Daddy, provides his #take on the situation.  Interesting note - just five CBJ players have played in all 17 games: Johansen, Hartnell, Boll (#danghostpepper?  We can work on that to get it trending in Cbus), Chaput, and Savard.  Yikes.
  • Sad health news regarding Gordie Howe.  Ditto for Sens GM Bryan Murray.
  • It appears Western expansion is on the way in the NHL, with some rather notorious owners already being settled on.  Team name - The Las Vegas...BlackJacks?  Provide your mascots below, if you'd like.
  • And finally, with all the turnover since he was traded, Jake Voracek says it's just another game when he faces his former team (which, if you're new around here, is the Columbus Blue Jackets...who traded him, with 1st (Sean Couturier) and 3rd (Nick Cousins) round picks, for Jeff *arter in 2011...who didn't want to be in Columbus, so they shipped him to L.A. for Jack Johnson and a 1st rounder.  That pick ended up being Marko Dano.  Oh and *arter went on to win two Cups).  Would you even trade Voracek for *arter straight up right now? Voracek may end up back in Columbus this season...as one of the top All-Stars.

Opponent's Blog: Winging It In Motown

The Jackets are back in action after a strong weekend back-to-back sweep of Philadelphia and San Jose. In getting a couple of key pieces back from injury, the club played with more confidence. Detroit comes to town a bit of an enigma. they're in good shape in terms of points, but they've gotten a lot of points from overtime losses and are just 2-2-3 in their last seven. That said, they've played a pretty tough schedule thus far, too. So, how good are they? Hard to say.

In an interesting flip of the script, this Detroit team no longer thrives on offense alone. This team thus far has been getting it down with defense, sporting top-ten goals-against and PK numbers. The PK has been especially good, and an interesting matchup tonight will be that PK against the Jackets' suddenly-humming Power Play unit. The Jackets have scored PPGs in 13 of their 17 games thus far, and are 7-for-16 (43.8%) in their last four games. They will face a tough test tonight to keep that trend going.

Columbus needs to continue earning as many points as they can right now, as the rest of their division is scuffling. The Jackets are five points out of third place with a game in hand. So, a regulation win would effectively put them three points out of third place. In other words, as bad as the Jackets have been, the rest of the division hasn't exactly pulled away.

Columbus is icing the same lineup from Saturday night, so hopefully they can get the same result. Looks like Pavel Datsyuk is a no-go for Detroit, which obviously helps Columbus a little bit.
