The Saga Continues... Blues At New York Rangers Preview

Road Music for a little trip to the Big Apple

What a strange time to be a Blues fan. On one hand, you could mourn the loss of fan favorites like T.J. Oshie or the prodigal son Paul Stastny. On the other, it's hard to be upset with a 4 game winning streak. Sure, you can complain that we let the Avs sneak out a point, but the more important thing is that the Blues came out with two. These are interesting times, indeed. There are plenty of positives to satisfy you and balance out the negative.

An intriguing pattern has emerged in the NHL already this season. There seems to be a disturbing amount of injuries to teams that use "blue" in their name. You're already familiar with the roster turnover that the Blues have gone through. The Blue Jackets have been through the grinder as well...

The NY Rangers have been called the "Blueshirts" for several years, and they are feeling the injury pinch as well. Particularly, their D corps has been affected. In the season opener here in St Louis, defenseman Dan Boyle broke his hand. He is still on the shelf. John Moore is off the ice for an injury, but for one he inflicted rather than one of his own. He's in the midst of of a 5-game suspension for a hit on the Wild's Erik Haula. Then, the Rangers got a double whammy by losing 2 defenseman early in the same game. Kevin Klein took a shot off the foot and is dealing with a "contusion". Bigger than that, captain Ryan McDonagh took a hit from Evander Kane that separated his left shoulder. This should keep him off the ice for 3-4 weeks. The Rangers were forced to play most of the game with just 4 defenseman. This resulted in a 1-0 shootout loss to Ondrej Pavelec and the Winnipeg Jets. While not a d-man, the Rangers have also lost Derek Stepan for a while. To reinforce the ranks, they have placed Ryan Malone on waivers to send him to Hartford, allowing cap space to call up 2 blueliners: Dylan McIlrath and Conor Allen.

Considering their patchwork defense, coach Alain Vigneault has made the unusual call of starting Cam Talbot in net. Why give Henrik Lundqvist a night off when the D might need him the most? Perhaps they are already writing off this game, or consider it less important since it's against the opposite conference. One would think that a hobbled D and a backup goalie would spell an easy victory for the Blues. But the Blues never do anything easily.

Another thing to be aware of: as bad as the Blues special teams have been, the Rangers have been pretty bad too. In particular, they have the 3rd worst power play in the league. They have only succeeded scoring on 7.1% of their opportunities. If nothing else, perhaps that can give the Blues PK a much needed boost. Hopefully the Blues will be coming home with some better special teams stats.

Part Three of the Tank Wars starts now!

Are you ready?

The Buffalo Sabres are right in the midst of the 2014-15 Tank Wars - the team has mustered seven points and sixteen goals in thirteen games. Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Arizona Coyotes and Edmonton Oilers are all in the vicinity for now, but you know they will pull away as the season goes along. The Sabres have the lead in the all-important ROW (regular & overtime wins) category too, with just one win.

Salient has hit upon the winning formula with his picks in the Tank Wars - he's picked O(ther), U(nder), U(nder), U(nder) in every game so far and has reaped the benefits. nwsabresfan also used this formula to score 21 points in round two. In second place tied with 20 points for round two were Ubiquitous, kitaman27 and predator007, all previous winners at the Pick n' Mix. Click here for the full spreadsheet and leaderboard.

Here is the overall top three -

#1 - Salient
#2 - Ubiquitous & Wolfdoctor
#3 - kitaman27

So on to the next round. This is the fantasy hockey game that needs no cheat sheets, stats, pencils, late night drafts or in fact, little to no knowledge of the Buffalo Sabres either. All you have to do is pick what you think the Sabres are going to do next. Here's Buffalo's schedule for the next couple of weeks -

Scoring is simple, all you need to do is come up with the following picks -

1) winning team [W] (including a shootout winner) = B (Buffalo) or O (Other)
2) goals [G] over/under in each game (O/U of 5.5 goals) = O (Over) or U (Under)
3) powerplay goals [PPG] over/under in each game (O/U of 1.5 goals) = O or U
4) penalty minutes [PIM] over/under in each game (O/U of 25 PIM) = O or U

See, it's really that simple! One point for each correct answer, a max of four per game. You can submit your answers in the comments section of this post, in the form of (for example) -

B O O O
O U O O
O O O U
B U O O etc.

We'll need all your week's picks in before puckdrop in the first game. If you miss the deadline, just put in your picks for the remaining games as soon as you can. This will be season-long, so make sure you don't miss any weeks. Good luck, and Go Mc-Eichel!

Do we really need to talk about this....again?

On this week's episode of the JetStream Podcast, the guys really do try their best to not talk about the same thing everyone has been talking about all season. So give them that.

But they failed.

This week things start off with a talk about the reactions to Ondrej Pavelec thus far in the season, and if he is worthy of an 'MVP' title to this point. The group continues on to talk about the diminishing returns that is the defensive group through the years, and the potential effects of Evander Kane returning to the lineup.

All that, plus the Hockey Gods hate the Columbus Blue Jackets, Johnny Gaudreau gots himself some dangles, and Michael Del Zotto is a giant creeper.

A Look at the New Jersey Devils Zone Exits and Entries

$

This is a series focusing on the passing and shot generation statistics for the New Jersey Devils and their opposition. Today, we take a brief detour and look at "how" the Devils are doing things, rather than just the numbers. Read on for the details.

In this series, I’ll show you how many there were, from where on the ice they were created, and who was involved in each of the offensive chances created from the passing of the New Jersey Devils and their opponents. If unfamiliar with passing statistics, please refer to my primer. This is a different type of article dealing with passing statistics. I wanted to take a deeper look at exactly how the Devils were creating offense and who was linking up with each player. This article focuses on the recent matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The recaps is here. Let’s get to it.

Devils and Penguins

For the Penguins game, I wanted to look at exactly how the Devils were trying to exit, enter, and set up in the Penguins zone. I will do this from time-to-time during the season, but it takes a bit longer to track, so it won't be on a weekly basis. So, here's what I saw.

Here, Brunner gains the zone on a pass from center ice by Andy Greene. He goes wide and then slows. He has two options: Ryane Clowe centrally, and Patrik Elias on the far boards. The spacing between the forwards allows for Brunner to either make a pass to Clowe for a shot in the slot area; or, and what I think is the preferred option, Clowe's movement opens up a lane for Brunner to make a pass to Elias. In theory, this would give Elias a chance to shoot, or, if the Penguins left defenseman commits to Elias, he could make a pass to Clowe for a chance as well. What actually happens is far less exciting: Brunner tries to go to Elias, but it's not a great pass.

This happens just a minute later in the game. It's a similar approach, presented in gif form. Take a look.

This is the same type of entry as the above screenshot. Jaromir Jagr makes a pass to Damon Severson, who enters, slows, and stops, much like Brunner did. Dainius Zubrus and Travis Zajac enter the zone and offer similar passing options for Severson. Zubrus heads to the net, while Zajac follows a bit behind and off to the left. Jagr, after making the pass, enters alongside Severson and creates space for the young defenseman by providing an option down the boards. However, we see the play develop a little further this time and as Zubrus goes across goal, Zajac loops back slightly in case Severson passes to him near the top of the circle. Let's stop it right as Severson makes his choice.

Okay, so Zubrus has beaten his man across the face of goal and has his stick down, presenting an easy target for Severson to make a pass for a deflection, creating a scoring chance for the Devils. It's not a bad play, but is it the best play he could make? Look at Zajac, who's now all by his lonesome, just inside the face-off circle. Chris Kunitz could present a problem in getting this puck over to him, but this is an entry they attempted twice in the first six minutes of the game. Brunner looked for the far option, but didn't have as much time as Severson (most likely because on Brunner's entry there wasn't a Devil creating space for him like Jagr did for Severson), whereas Severson went with the safer choice. Safe to say, the play worked in design if Zajac is an option.

Now, those are both controlled entries. About six minutes later in the first period, the Devils dump it in, Jagr, Zubrus, and Zajac go to work, cycle it a bit, and then complete a play that I posted as a gif in the Week 2 Passing Stats that shows Jagr come up the far boards, pass to the right point defenseman, who then passes to Eric Gelinas at the left point for a shot from near the top of the circle. Honestly, Gelinas is practically against the boards when he shoots as there is no angle here. It's not a great quality shot, yet we see this same set up, time and time again. Take a look in three screenshots.

Jagr makes the pass to Jon Merrill at the point.

Merrill makes the pass across to Gelinas, who has tons of room.

Unfortunately, Gelinas doesn't have a great first touch of the puck and it rolls off to the boards. There, he doesn't have many options except to take a shot that Marc-Andre Fleury easily stops (though I'm not sure how many easy stops there are for Fleury).

The next entry involves Clowe, Brunner, and Elias. Clowe will receive the puck from Merrill, skate up into the neutral zone, and then be converged upon by two Penguins. Clowe flips the puck past them into the space Elias is entering. See below.

Now, the puck is bouncing a bit, but Elias is able to flick it ahead as he has Brunner entering the zone behind him. Elias recognizes Brunner will get into the zone clean because Simon Depres is about to cut down Elias.

The puck is now on its way to meeting Brunner as he enters the zone. He's allowed to get a shot off due to the time and space Elias' pass gave him.

Notice the referee has his arm raised for Depres' penalty on Elias. Brunner takes his shot, but it's blocked. The play drew a penalty, so it was a success. Also, any play that ends with Brunner in space an able to attempt a shot is a decent play as well.

Now, let's look at some of the ways the Devils were exiting the zone (or tried to) against the Penguins.

The first example is an open play break out, meaning it's not the result of a defensive zone face-off. You'll see Andy Greene pass up to Severson, who skates out of the zone. Adam Henrique is to his left against the far boards, but is being marked closely by Pascal Dupuis. Reid Boucher is cutting across the neutral zone, perhaps hoping for a pass to gain entry in the Penguins zone, but none comes. This may be because by taking the course Boucher does, he and Michael Ryder end up in the same area of the ice, covered quite easily. Severson is left no choice but to dump the puck.

In this next example, I've broken it down into screenshots. The Devils recover a loose puck in their own end and move out. First, Jagr skates away to the near boards while passing ahead for Zubrus to break out.

In the next still, we see Zubrus, Jagr, Zajac, and Gelinas all rushing up the ice in the neutral zone.

Zubrus has a lot of options here: he can dump it, pass across to Zajac, or drop it to Gelinas. Let's see what he does.

Zubrus enters the zone and throws the puck in deep. There are eight skaters clustered in about one quarter of the Penguins zone, so it's probably the smart move since any pass will either be intercepted or deflected. Poor spacing doesn't give the puck-carrier any options and suddenly a dump-in becomes the best play available. The Devils would cycle and settle for a shot from the point. Woo hoo.

Let's take a look at the next Devils exit. Here, Severson makes a lead pass for Boucher to latch onto.

Now, Boucher will have speed and space to move through the neutral zone. Unfortunately, he won't have many options on his entry.

This looks promising. Space for a young player, teammates about to enter the zone and perhaps present passing options akin to Brunner and Severson's entries from the first period. Nope.

Ryder nearly goes offside and Henrique goes to the net, yet two Penguins are on Boucher as soon as he enters the zone. Boucher attempts a weak shot on net from distance. Yet, there were better options. See below.

Now, it may be difficult for Boucher to make a pass back across the top of the zone to Ryder, who is wideeeee open. However, all five Penguins are covering both Boucher and Henrique, which, I'm sure, is not the way they want to play defense. This could have been a great opportunity for Ryder had the pass come.

Here's another look at the Devils break out from open play. Spoiler alert: it ends with an unnecessary dump-in and losing possession. Here's how it happened.

It begins with Merrill advancing out of his own end with possession. He draws a Penguin and dishes it to Zajac at center ice.

Zajac now has Ruutu on his left, who he sees, and Gionta on his right, who he may not know is there. He should know there will be another forward on his right, but I can't fault him for not making a play on something he may not know is there. That being said, he should have made a better play here. He could continue skating and draw Paul Martin towards him, and make a pass into the space behind Martin that Ruutu would be entering. Or, he could make a lead pass to Ruutu and still charge Martin, though the first option would be best.

Now, most of the Devils zone exits had a defenseman behind their own net and an option on either board. They'd make a pass or skate it out themselves. About forty seconds after this series of play, they tried something different.

Here, you can see Gelias, Merrill, and Zajac all behind the net. Ruutu presents an outlet as he flashes across in the slot. Gelinas gets him the puck and Ruutu is off to the races. It doesn't amount to much, but it at least flips the ice rather than get hemmed in. I'd rather they have an option through center rather than the options on the boards as that seems to limit the options for that player.

Your Thoughts

What'd you think? This is a little different as a lot of times I track stats and what to know more of the "how" and "why" things happen rather than just the "what," so this was an attempt to understand a little bit about the Devils exits, entries, and how they set up. Next time, I'll be adding another wrinkle: how many times players linkup with each other to generate shots. I wanted to get a few games of this data, so you'll see, for example, of the ten shots Elias generated, how many went to Henrique? Zidlicky? Jagr? Also, which players were the most efficient combinations? Let me know any other ideas you'd like to see (within reason) and I'll see what I can do.

Game Notes

  • The Canes are on a winning streak, y'all. It felt good to type "Won 2" in the Fancy Stats table. But before anyone gets too giddy, a quick look at the McEichel standings shows the Canes holding in second place (though still dead last in the league). However, a win tonight against divisional rival Columbus Blue Jackets (and a repeat when the two teams meet in Raleigh on Friday) and all of a sudden the Canes are climbing up the ranks.
  • Jordan Staal's broken leg nonwithstanding, the Canes are healthy and able to begin building chemistry and consistency. As such, Monday's practice didn't offer a lot of changes to the weekend's line-up with the exception of the return of Alexander Semin to the top line. As has been repeated across the hockey universe, Alex Semin 1) makes $7 million a year and 2) was scratched for both wins this weekend. Coach Bill Peters felt he was not moving his skates at an NHL pace and not working hard enough, so Sasha took a seat in the press box to think upon it. He was back yesterday, skating with Eric Staal and Jiri Tlusty, and all indications are that Peters will go with that line tonight.
  • The downstream effect of Semin's return bumps Jeff Skinner, and given the chemistry shown on Sunday between the Gerbe/Nash/Lindholm and Terry/Rask/Boychuk lines, Skinner has found himself with Jay McClement and Patrick Dwyer (and with Brad Malone likely the odd man out). For now.
  • One decision that was easy for Peters to make was to ride the hot goalie. Coming off two first-star performances over the weekend, Cam Ward will get his fourth consecutive start. If math serves me correctly, in the two games Wardo has an even strength save percentage of .979 and an overall save percentage of .965.
  • Jiri Tlusty is currently ranked 10th in the NHL in goal scoring with six goals. Jeff Skinner is two goals away from 100 NHL goals. Alex Semin is four points away from 500 NHL points. Elias Lindholm is on a two-game goal scoring streak. Victor Rask is on a one-game goal scoring streak :)
  • Bill Peters comments from yesterday's practice: (audio)
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets are walking wounded and losers of their last five, which is always cause for concern for the slump-busting Canes. Take a look at their injury list below, six players on injured reserve (not including Nathan Horton) and it doesn't appear as though any of those players will be back for Friday when the teams meet for a rematch in Raleigh.
  • That said, their line-up is getting a huge boost tonight with the return of forward Boone Jenner, who will make his season debut tonight after suffering a broken hand during training camp. Winger Matt Calvert is also expected to return after missing a week with an upper body injury.
  • Despite their adversity, the Jackets are a team that always plays the Canes hard and holds a competitive edge with eight wins in the last 10 meetings. On the bright side, those two wins for the Canes came last season, once in Raleigh (for the first time since 2005) and once in Columbus (first since 2004).
  • Scott Hartnell did not practice yesterday (and therefore isn't on the depth chart below) but will be in the line-up tonight. The Jackets called up Frederic St. Denis yesterday for defenseman depth after Cody Goloubef was placed on injured reserve. If Matt Calvert also returns, Columbus may need to make another roster move today.
  • Ryan Johanssen leads the team with 13 points (5g, 8a), Nick Foligno is close behind with 11 points (4g, 7a).
  • Curtis McElhinney gets the start in net tonight.

Projected line-ups

Columbus ventures into New Jersey in search of a spark that would let them shake of the injury plagued slump in which they find themselves. The devil is in the details.

Opponent's Blog: In Lou We Trust

The Blue Jackets are in Newark, New Jersey this evening for the first of four matches with the New Jersey Devils.  After a 4 - 1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs that was scarier than anything else you saw on Halloween, the club is looking to find some combination of players that can provide the combination of skill and energy necessary to withstand the devastating blow inflicted by the injury bug.

The Devils are off to a good start this season, with Cory Schneider providing some stability in net in the post-Brodeur era, and Mike Cammalleri leading the goal production statistics. On Thursday, the club won its first shootout game since the demise of wooden sticks, and is looking to build on the 5-3-2 start that has the Devils above the playoff line in the early going.  However, New Jersey has also begun to feel the sting of the injury bug, with Cammalleri, Martin Havlat and Jordin Tootoo all on the shelf for tonight's game.

With only an optional skate this morning, divining the Blue Jackets' lineup involves a bit of speculation, but I'm going out on a limb to suggest that Anton Forsberg will make his debut in goal.  Curtis McElhinney has looked awkward and ill-prepared in his two starts, surrendering some particularly horrific rebounds against the Leafs last night.  He made some good saves against Toronto, but does nothing to inspire confidence, has a GAA well north of 4.0 and a save percentage south of .900.   If nothing else, Forsberg might provide a rallying point for the rest of the squad.

I'm also figuring that Brian Gibbons and Cody Goloubef draw in for this one, providing some additional speed and skill.   Dalton Prout was painfully slow to react against Toronto, and Columbus needs to stay on the offensive and keep the puck out of its own zone tonight. While the Columbus penalty kill has plummeted from #1 in the NHL to 24th over the recent unpleasantness, the Devils rank 29th in that category, stopping just 68.2% of the extra man chances.  If the Blue Jackets can skate and exert pressure, they can hopefully generate some penalties and extra man chances.  They can't continue to ride just four forwards, as Atkinson, Johansen, Hartnell and Foligno averaged over 20 minutes of ice time on Friday night.  That can't last, particularly when the schedule has Friday/Saturday back-to-backs for the next several weeks.

It's a tough stretch, but the raw talent is there to be competitive, even with the depleted roster.  They just need to find the formula to use it to maximum advantage.

The Jackets are starting to get healthy, little by little. Tonight, it's Boone Jenner and Matt Calvert. Every little bit helps.

Carolina Hurricanes at Columbus Blue Jackets

Nationwide Arena - Columbus, Ohio
Radio - WBNS 97.1 - TV - Fox Sports Ohio
Opponent's Blog: Canes Country

Alas, it has come to this. These two games could, legitimately, put the Jackets into the division cellar. The Canes have played one fewer game, so if they can get two more points than Columbus in these two games they would pass Columbus. Make no mistake: Carolina is a bad, bad team. But, right now (over the past five games), so is Columbus.

However, there is some hope on the horizon. This team is--however slowly--starting to get healthy. Matt Calvert AND Boone Jenner are officially off the IR list, and are slated to play tonight. Count me among those that thinks even a rusty Calvert and Jenner are better options than Adam Cracknell and Corey Tropp. The extra energy (think these guys aren't chomping at the bit, especially Jenner?) and skill makes Columbus that much better on its face.

That said, they may be without Ryan Murray who was not participating in the morning skate this morning. Fredric St. Denis was called up yesterday, and he may get the start if Murray is not able to go. This could be problematic, as Curtis McElhinney hasn't been at his best since Sergei Bobrovsky went down. The Jackets' PK, also, has been abysmal of late, killing just 16 of their 25 times shorthanded over the last six games (1-5-0). That's a 64% success rate, and that is frankly just terrible.

Carolina hasn't been good on offense at even strength, but their Power Play has actually not been bad. The Canes have scored just 21 goals in 10 games, and seven of those goals (33.3%) have come on the Power Play. They have the players in Staal, Skinner, and Semin to put the puck in the net on the Power Play, and so the Jackets need to be disciplined and also solid on the PK. I think Calvert and Jenner can help with the latter, but the former would go a long way toward keeping things in check; just don't take dumb penalties and give them chances!

In net for Carolina, they're trying to find a hot hand to ride, as neither Cam Ward (.885 sv%) nor Anton Khudobin (.891 sv%) has been good. That said, Ward is riding a two-game winning streak that included just two goals allowed in two games against Arizona and Los Angeles. But, if Columbus can pepper Ward with shots, the stats say that eventually he'll crack.

Honestly, the Jackets played hard on Saturday, but just didn't have the talent on the ice to overcome the inevitable bad bounces. Tonight, they're closer to icing a team we can expect to win, especially against a bad team like Carolina. This team just needs a win, honestly. Let's start it off tonight.

Game Day #12 - Blue Jackets vs. Hurricanes

The Jackets are starting to get healthy, little by little. Tonight, it's Boone Jenner and (possibly) Matt Calvert. Every little bit helps.

Count me among those that things even a rusty Calvert and Jenner are better options than Adam Cracknell and Corey Tropp.

Game 13 recap: Lightning wrap perfect homestand with 5-2 win over Calgary

The Tampa Bay Lightning won their fourth straight game, finishing the current homestand undefeated as they knocked off the Calgary Flames 5-2 in Tampa Thursday night.

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Calgary Flames 5-2 Thursday night at the Amalie Arena, extending their current win streak to four games and capping an undefeated homestand.

Tonight's game was an early "something's gotta give" affair as both the Lightning and the so far better-than-most-people-expected Flames came in riding three-game winning streaks.

"Yeah, they're a very good team. They have a lot of skill, they play a very structured game. Tough team to play against, tough team to get opportunities against." - Lightning forward Tyler Johnson

Calgary came out hot, registering four shots on goal within the first minute. But the Lightning opened the scoring at 9:55 when Cedric Paquete scored his first NHL goal, thanks to an assist from Jonathan Drouin.

"I thought we moved the puck well in the offensive zone, me Vladdy and Jo, and I just tried to jam the net and it went in. I think I will remember it for the rest of my life. It's a great moment for me." - Paquette

The Flames tied things up at 15:22 on a goal from Jiri Hudler, who was assisted by T.J. Brodie and Mark Giordano.

The teams would head into the first intermission tied at one.

The Lightning regained the lead at 1:01 of the second on Paquette's second goal of the night, this time getting help from Vladislav Namestnikov and Jason Garrison. Paquette had quite a game, contributing a spectacular blocked shot later in the period.

The Bolts opened things up at 4:02 with Brian Boyle scoring the team's forst shorthanded goal of the season, stealing the puck at the blue line, skating in alone on Calgary goaltender Jonas Hiller and then swatting home his own rebound.

Any breathing easy that resulted from a two-goal lead disappeared 20 seconds later as Sean Monahan cashed in on the power play still in effect. Johnny Gaudreau and Giordano were credited with assists,

The Lightning would hold a 3-2 lead going into the third.

At the :40 mark, Tampa Bay's most productive line, The Triplets, if you will, got in on the act with Tyler Johnson scoring from Nikita Kucherov and Ondrej Palat.

At 2:25 Johnson would contribute a pretty spectacular blocked shot of his own to help the cause.

At 17:50, Valtteri Filppula finished things off with an unassisted empty netter.

Lightning goalie Ben Bishop stopped 29 of the 31 shots he faced, not allowing a goal over the final 35:38.

The Lightning will now head out on the road, facing the Blue Jackets in Columbus on Saturday followed by games in Detroit and Chicago before returning home next Thursday to host the San Jose Sharks.

Game notes:

  • This was the second and final regular season meeting between Calgary and Tampa Bay this season. The Lightning won both contests.
  • The Lightning are now 16-12-1-1 all-time against the Flames.
  • Steven Stamkos had a three-game points-scored streak (two goals and three assists) broken.
  • Over his past six games, Kucherov has rung up five goals and five assists.
  • The Lightning conclude this homestand with a 4-0-0 record, outscoring opponents 19-10.
  • After having four full days off between games on the homestand, the Lightning will now play three games in four days on the road.
  • Tonight was Military Appreciation Night at the Amalie Arena. The Lightning hosted more than 2,300 service members, active duty and veterans, with tickets to tonight's game.
  • The Lightning honored Sgt. Taylor Urruela as the eighth Lightning Community Hero of the year during the first period of tonight's game. Urruela, who received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, will donate the money to VETSports. Sgt. Urruela is a leader in the Tampa Bay community who exemplifies the true essence of courage having overcome adversity and responding with a helping hand to other soldiers facing the aftermath of returning from war. He served in the United States Army and was deployed to Iraq. In 2006, two days before Urreula was scheduled to come home from deployment, his Humvee was struck by roadside bombs that killed his commanding officer and severely injured him and his comrades. Coming back home was a difficult transition for Sgt. Urruela. However, he realized that the struggles with transitioning to life after war were shared by many and decided to co-found VETSports. VETSports is a national organization dedicated to helping veterans heal and transition through the power of athletics. Their mission is to help veterans achieve better physical, mental and emotional health after service through sports, physical activity and community involvement.

Jersey sponsorship is ‘coming’ to the NHL | ProHockeyTalk
As long as the advertisements are not as omnipresent as they are on SHL jerseys, then I am fine with whatever the NHL chooses to implement. If they do it like European football clubs, that is fine with me (I agree, United's Chevy logo is imposing, but most other jerseys are fine). Jersey sponsorship is inevitable, and if Bettman truly wants to turn the NHL into a successful money-making league, then this is the obvious next step for him.

Game Notes

  • The big story is that every Canes fan's favorite Columbus player, Jack Johnson, will be out of the line-up tonight after receiving a three-game suspension for his illegal check to Jiri Tlusty's head in Tuesday's game. In case you missed it, the DoPS video does an outstanding job explaining the rationale behind the suspension.
  • Tlusty did skate yesterday in practice, but in a no-contact jersey. He's expected to be in the line-up tonight, but confirmation will come after today's morning skate. If he's not able to skate, Brad Malone will draw back in. There were no changes to the forward lines from Tuesday's game.
  • Tim Gleason did not practice yesterday, and there was no update to his status after practice. If he's unable to play, expect John-Michael Liles to take his spot on defense.
  • Cam Ward will be back in net for his fifth consecutive start. The Canes face another back-to-back scenario this weekend, heading to DC to take on the Capitals Saturday night. Ward will be evaluated after tonight's game and a decision will be made then as to tomorrow's netminder.
  • The most concerning statistic for the Columbus Blue Jackets is the six-game losing streak. The Blue Jackets are a team decimated by injuries, but they are hard-working and physical. It's difficult to believe they won't break through with a win some time soon.
  • While the Jackets are losing Jack Johnson, they're getting back James Wisniewski, who was activated from IR yesterday after suffering a broken index finger on October 28. Ryan Murray (who was not in the line-up Tuesday) has been moved to IR to accommodate Wisniewski's return.
  • Nick Foligno continues to have the hot mits, scoring both goals in Tuesday's loss. He leads the team with 6 goals.
  • The Blue Jackets haven't named their starting goaltender.

There's not a lot else that is new going into tonight's game, so how about a few AWESOME clips.

First of all, if you read the title and haven't seen "Zombieland," please do yourself a favor and watch it.

Second of all, I called Carolina a "bad, bad team" on Tuesday, and (deservedly) got some flak for it. No more of that tonight. The Jackets did not show anything on Tuesday that would suggest they are better than Carolina right now, so they need to earn that back from me first. Carolina, you're the best.

In all seriousness, the Hurricanes dominated in pretty much every area (except the score, really, when you think about it) the other night. The Jackets played lethargic, they looked sloppy, and Carolina looked far, far faster. All of that needs to change if Columbus would like to end their six-game losing streak.

Ugh. Six games.

Good news? James Wisniewski is back tonight. Bad news? Jack Johnson is out with a suspension. While that may not be "bad" news in the world of fancy stats, you can't deny that he plays a lot of minutes. Whether or not he *should* be is a discussion for another time.

Cam Ward goes again for Carolina. At "press time" nothing's been released about who will start for Columbus. It probably shouldn't be Curtis McElhinney, but it won't surprise me if it is.

Number To Know: Searching For Four Straight

$
0
0

Carolina looks for its fourth straight win Friday when they host Columbus. So is goaltender Cam Ward.

Number To Know

1,742 — Days since Cam Ward earned a win in four straight starts. Ward has reeled off three straight wins this week and will have a chance to nab his fourth vs. Columbus. When was the last time Ward won four games in a row? It was Jan. 24-30, 2010, when Ward won games vs. the Bruins, Rangers, Islanders and Blackhawks. Ward stopped 129 of 134 shots in the stretch, including a 39-save effort in the final game over Chicago. Ward has stopped 72 of 76 in his current three-game winning streak and will be looking for his fourth win in seven nights — the same total of days he needed to get his last two four-game win streaks.

Ward has won four games or more in a row eight times in his career, with the longest streak coming in March and April of 2009, when he ran off nine straight victories. Carolina last won four straight when they managed a five-game streak last season from Dec. 31, 2013, to Jan. 9, 2014.
