NHL offseason 2013: Goalie market primed with potential opportunity

0

Gyi0062042501

Goaltending is expected to be a primary focus in the 2013 NHL offseason. Based upon reports, rumors and speculation, it's believed that top-tier talent will be available this summer, whether by free agency or trade. With this in mind, it's anticipated that movement will be coming over the next few weeks.

The process began in earnest on Sunday afternoon when the Los Angeles Kings formally announced that Jonathan Bernierhad been traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Ben Scrivens, Matt Frattin and a conditional second-round draft selection. While Bernier is unproven, many believe that he has the potential to be a No. 1 goaltender in the league. This prospective production was strong enough to generate interest among several teams.

Bernier is a restricted free agent this summer, which will require Toronto to negotiate a new contract with the 24-year-old netminder. Assuming that process is a formality, the teams who were unable to acquire Bernier are still in the market for a goaltender.

The primary options available to those clubs likely include Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller, Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks and unrestricted free agent Mike Smith.

Miller's availability appears to be a fluid situation. Reports have indicated that the Sabres are going to go through a complete restructuring of their organization, with a focus on developing through the draft. Miller is entering the final year of his contract in 2013-14 and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer. It's been portrayed that the Sabres will look to move Miller in the event that he won't sign a contract extension. Conversely, it's also been presented that re-signing Miller will be far too costly considering the expected rebuild.

The goaltender is likely a viable asset that could fetch a healthy return via trade. For a franchise like Buffalo, which has hinted that a youth movement might be in the works, someone of Miller's caliber could aide in acquiring draft picks and/or prospects that could help in a restructuring. Especially if he has no intention of returning beyond next season.

Luongo's situation is well chronicled. Both sides are interested in getting a deal done but have had a difficult time finding a willing partner. This is likely because Vancouver manager Mike Gillis has been asking for too much in a return and Luongo's contract is an unattractive attachment. Toronto was believed to be the best fit, but the acquisition of Bernier has complicated that.

In the event that Gillis can't find a trade, the team has the option of using a compliance buyout. Of course, that might not go over well with ownership and would be a waste of an asset.

Smith is the least complicated option given that he is a free agent. Of course, that's only if a team is comfortable with his contract demands, which are reportedly steep. Some believe that Smith might be inclined to remain with the Phoenix Coyotes given that head coach Dave Tippett has signed an extension with the team. Based on previous reports, it seems as though a combination of circumstance, salary and situation (the team's ability to ice a competitive team), are the most important factors to Smith and will ultimately sway his decision.

A wild card option could be Philadelphia Flyers netminder Ilya Bryzgalov. It's unclear what the Flyers are going to do with the goaltender. From a speculative perspective, it appears as though the situation is fluid. If the Flyers are presented with an opportunity that is appealing to them, Bryzgalov could be administered a compliance buyout. That opportunity could span from a new direction in goal to requiring cap space to add a skater.

Former Flyers goaltender and reigning Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky is also a possibility. Bobrovsky is a restricted free agent this summer and negotiations have not progressed with the Columbus Blue Jackets. However, Columbus has made it clear that it has every intention of retaining Bobrovsky. This likely excludes him as a legitimate candidate this offseason. Of course, until Columbus finalizes a contract, it still leaves the door open.

Other potential options include unrestricted free agents Evgeni Nabokov and Niklas Backstrom. Both players played in 40-plus games last season, but are also older than 35. This leaves their teams, the New York Islanders and Minnesota Wild, with the option of pursuing new opportunities this offseason (however, both organizations have expressed interest in potentially retaining their services).

Other teams prospectively interested in goaltending could include the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, Philadelphia and Phoenix.

Hey all! Welcome to another instalment of Arctic Ice Hockey's annual NHL Mock Draft.

Over the next thirty days, we will attempt to telepathically channel the minds of NHL General Managers as they complete their final rankings in preparation for the 2013 NHL Draft being held June 30, 2012 in Newark, NJ.

Without further adieu, we present our loyal readers with the twenty-fourth overall pick of Arctic Ice Hockey's 2013 Mock Draft.

Mike Gillis: With the twenty-fourth overall selection in this years draft, the Vancouver Canucks' are pleased to select...

Ryan Hartman

Right Wing / Plymouth Whalers (OHL)

185

September 20, 1994

Hometown: Hilton Head Island, SC

Shoots: Right

Rankings: CSS (16 NA), ISS (NA), TSN (26), Hockey Prospectus (42)

Hockey Prospectus:

"Hartman is a do-it-all type player who can provide significant two-way value despite being a tad undersized, at around 5'11". He is smart, and he makes creative plays in both puck handling and passing. He is a very aware defensive player, as he makes great reads, and he will provide value in his own end at both even strength and the penalty kill. Hartman is a hard worker, which adds to his defensive value. On the forecheck, he can deliver good pressure, and the occasional big hit. He has decent, if not solid speed. He lacks the blazing top gear that a player with below-average size would optimally possess, but his skating is acceptable. Hartman will create from the perimeter, drive the net, and play tough defensive situations."

Even though Tristan Jarry appears to have a lot of talent, he's a difficult player to judge. Drafted by the Oil Kings, he's spent the last two years as the understudy to Calgary prospect Laurent Brossoit, one of the best goalies in the Dub over the past two seasons. When Jarry's had the opportunity to come in as the backup, he's played well, and also had a strong performance at the CHL top prospects game earlier this year. The issue is simply a small sample size. Is he really as good as he seems? Or is he good because he's been getting limited minutes with a lot of stellar talent in front of him to make his job easier?

The proof will come next year, with Brossoit expected to go pro and Jarry to take over the Oil Kings' net full time, but that's not soon enough for a GM who has to decide if he's willing to take a shot on the BC native.

Jarry is ranked #3 among North American goalies by NHL Central Scouting, and there's no question he has potential - but the jury is still out on if that potential can translate to performance.

Scouting Reports:

Jarry plays a very athletic, butterfly style. His technique is good and he gets in and out of the butterfly very quickly and does not leave large gaps between his legs or between his arms and body. Jarry has quick legs throwing out his pads to take away the bottom of the net. His glove hand is excellent and takes away the top corners. He moves around the crease well, with good puck tracking and the ability to go post to post with ease. His backwards skating is also solid which should allow him to challenge shooters off the rush. While having solid technique, Jarry is also very instinctive and more than just a "puck blocker" as he has great reflexes and can make the odd diving save that wouldn't expect him to be able to get to.

-Last Word On Sports

Why He'd Be A Good Fit In Columbus:

You can never get enough goaltending, and even though the Jackets have some promising players in the pipeline, they continue to make increasing their depth a priority. Even with promising talent in the form of Anton Forsberg and Oscar Dansk, there are question marks around the long term future for Joonas Korpisalo. If the club thinks that their 2012 3rd round pick is going to stay in Europe, taking a swing on Jarry could work out nicely to give the club a good North American prospect who will have the opportunity to build up his game over the next two seasons.

Jarry In Action:

Sorry, kinda tough to find highlight reels for a backup goaltender, but enjoy this awesome picture of Jarry bro-fisting fellow 2013 draft prospect Curtis Lazar.

"Compher is the top prospect to emerge from the USA development program in this draft (keeping in mind that Seth Jones played for the USNTDP last year). He is a great all-around player, above average or better at just about every area of the game, despite his 5'11" frame. He is a good skater who picks up speed well, and he has a high-energy element in his play. He forechecks and backchecks with speed, pressuring the opposition, while showing no hesitation to bang bodies. He is very skilled, with above-average puck skills and offensive instincts. On occasion, he will show elements of true offensive flash. He can make individual plays, and he tends to find his teammates well."

NHL Mock Draft 2013: Columbus Blue Jackets select Valentin Zykov with No.19 Pick

0
0
159589837

After choosing Max Domi 14th overall, we turned our attention to another forward with the 19th overall selection. Given the lack of depth and high-end talent up front, and the relative strength of the defense, we wanted to add a player who filled organizational needs but was also one of the best players available.

We went with Valentin Zykov.

He's a rough-and-tumble power winger with a real nose for the net and good size. He was one of the best players on a very good Baie-Comeau team that made it to the QMJHL finals this year. Domi has more natural offensive talent, but Zykov brings an element that the Jackets are sorely lacking right now- high end skill paired with physicality and size.

Zykov was awarded the Michel Bergeron trophy as QMJHL Rookie of the Year and the RDS Cup as Overall Rookie of the Year. In addition, he was also named CHL Rookie of the Year, beating out none other than Seth Jones and Erie Otters phenom Connor McDavid.

Another player we considered with this pick was Anthony Mantha, but he was taken one spot prior by the Detroit Red Wings.

The draft, thus far:

15New York IslandersAlexander Wennberg
16Buffalo SabresFrederik Gauthier
17Ottawa SenatorsRyan Pulock
18Detroit Red WingsAnthony Mantha
19Columbus Blue JacketsValentin Zykov

If Ryan Pulock was still on the board at 19th overall, he would have been awfully tempting as well.

Zykov should be a great fit with the Jackets. He's got plenty of countrymen mentors on the team to ease his transition, and is already playing in North America. The Drakkar should be contenders again next season, and Zykov will be leading them. He'll have time to develop, and when he's ready he has the ability to step into the Columbus lineup and provide a power forward element not seen on a Columbus roster in quite some time.

For more on Zykov, check out his draft prospect profile.

In terms of a projection, he would be a fantastic compliment to Cam Atkinson at right wing. The duo could very well man the top two right wing positions in the future, with Atkinson's lack of size offset by Zykov's bulk and pugnacity. He'd do well playing with a playmaking center, but he has the ability to create offense himself by taking the puck to the net and working along the boards.

Miikka Kiprusoff to retire, according to multiple reports

Calgary Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff has decided to retire from professional hockey, according to multiple reports on Tuesday morning.

The initial report came from Juha Hiitelä of Urheilusanomat who translated a tweet from Mikael Hoikkala of STT that stated Kiprusoff informed the Finnish National Team that he was retiring.

Later on Tuesday morning, Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet tweeted that the Columbus Blue Jackets have requested permission from the Flames to engage in discussions with Kiprusoff about returning next season. Kypreos believes Kiprusoff will not change his stance on retiring.

This news comes a few days after Calgary general manager Jay Feaster stated that Kiprusoff was leaning toward retirement. However, Feaster insinuated that his decision could change over the course of the offseason.

According to a previous report from former coach Mike Keenan, Kiprusoff negotiated his current contract under the expectation that he would retire before the final year. While the 36-year-old goaltender carries an annual average value of $5.8 million against the salary cap, he is only being paid $1.5 million in actual salary in 2013-14, which is a serious decline from the $5 million-plus he earned in the first five years of the deal.

Kiprusoff Announces Probable Retirement in Precisely the Ambiguous Way we all Expected

0
0
166854056

SB Nation user Maija Vilppo passed along a link to an article on a Finnish news website earlier this morning in which Finnish team head coach Erkka Westerlund says Miikka Kiprusoff is "finishing up his career."

Westerlund asked Kiprusoff about the possibility of him playing goal for Finland in Sochi next February, and when the list of players likely to join the Suomi was revealed and Kiprusoff was not on it, people in Finland likely began to draw their own conclusions.

Kiprusoff, whose impending decision not to return to the NHL next season has been widely anticipated, told Westerlund that "if the Flames have not announced his retirement publicly [by this time], [Westerlund] can tell the decision [to the media]."

So there we have it. The Flames' best goalie in franchise history likely just announced the end of his NHL playing career in exactly the way we all expected it to happen; without any pomp and circumstance, and probably with a little shrug of his shoulders and a deadpan expression on his face.

Of course the Flames have yet to post anything about Kiprusoff's decision on their website, possibly because the organization is attempting to convince him not to retire in order to accept a trade to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Still with me here?

How the Blue Jackets, who still could not make the playoffs this season with Vezina winner Sergei Bobrovsky stopping pucks for them, would be any more successful in luring Kipper away from his family and probable retirement than the Leafs were back in March, I don't know.

Perhaps Jarmo Kekalianen possesses stronger powers of persuasion (and minus any language barrier) than Dave Nonis.

"Hagg is a really gifted defenseman who progressed as the season went on, going from the junior league to playing in the SEL although his performance was up and down throughout the campaign. Hagg has a real easiness to his game. He is a high-end skater, possessing an effortless stride and quick acceleration. He appears to glide when he is on the ice, with a high amount of offensive ability. He makes quality rushes, and he displays great puck movement in every zone. He is not a flashy puck handler, but he has good subtle hands, with the ability to make open ice maneuvers. He has a big shot from the point, and several NHL sources indicate that he frequently relies on that asset."

2014 Stanley Cup Odds: Nashville Predators Begin the Chase at 40/1

The Chicago Blackhawks are the 2013 Stanley Cup champions, after a sensational late 3rd-period comeback that saw the Hawks snatch victory away from the Boston Bruins just as they were poised to force a Game 7. Hmm... didn't we just talk about stunning reversals of fortune here recently?

Anyway, no sooner does the quest for the 2013 Stanley Cup end, than the chase for the 2014 Stanley Cup begins. Starting tomorrow night, teams can buy players out of contracts in order to clear up cap space, and on Sunday, the NHL Draft will likely see a flurry of trade activity as GM's prepare for the free agency market, which opens on July 5th.

Naturally, the odds makers are ready to do business, and Bovada has laid out their initial odds for next year's NHL championship:

Odds to win the 2014 Stanley Cup

So, Nashville Predators fans, how do you like those odds? Personally, I think they're right about where I'd put them at this moment - 30/1 would represent an average NHL team's chance to win it all. Given the Preds' finish last season, and the likely influx of youth into the lineup up front, placing them just a notch below "average" seems about right.

Obviously we hope that a few holes get patched up and the team is ready to compete coming out of the gate this fall, but do these odds have you thinking about setting aside the mortgage payment and calling your bookie?

Dallas Stars Daily Links: Chris Brown First of Many North Texas NHLers

Later this week, Plano's Seth Jones will undoubtedly become the most famous and highly-touted NHL draft pick to call the DFW Metroplex his home. Last year, however, Flower Mound's Chris Brown beat him to the NHL, an honor that was officially recognized by the city council earlier this month.

Seth Jones will join the ranks of Austin Smith, Stefan Noesen, Blake Coleman, Colton Hargrove, Colin Jacobs, and Chris Brown when he is selected in the first round of the NHL draft in New Jersey. At the celebration in Flower Mound, Brown was also read proclamations from the Texas congress, an honor that wasn't lost on him.

"I’ve won gold medals and CCHA tournaments and played in the Frozen Four, but to be honored by your hometown and recognized by the state of Texas as a pioneer of youth hockey here means so much to me." [DMN]

Even though the Dallas Stars themselves failed to make the playoffs once again last season, that doesn't mean their bevy of prospects failed to get valuable playoff experience on their respective teams. Hockey's Future takes a look at the depths of the Stars prospect pool, and tells us just how they fared in their respective post-season runs. [Hockey's Future]

With all the changes that have already occurred, and all those that have been promised on the horizon, what does that mean for two of the longest tenured members of the Stars organization? SportDFW takes a look at Trevor Daley and Stephane Robidas, and asks if this is perhaps the end of the road for them in green and black. [SportDFW]

New bench boss of the Dallas Stars, Lindy Ruff, is still making his rounds across the media landscape of the Metroplex, this time appearing on The Ticket's BaD Radio with Bob Sturm and Dan McDowell. As always, Mark Stepneski has it recorded for those of us that missed it. [Inside Edge]

With John Tortorella finally landing in Vancouver, it appears as though the coaching carousel is finally slowing to a crawl. It looks like former Dallas Stars head coach, Glen Gulutzan, might be on the verge of landing a job with the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Marlies... a post recently left vacant by Dallas Eakins, who took the Edmonton Oilers job. [Rotoworld]

Speaking of the Oilers, Craig MacTavish talks about his plans for the off-season. He says that the team plans to be very active on draft day, and would rather trade assets than buy anyone out. He also is very open to the idea of using the team's multiple second round selections as currency to get what the Oilers need. [Canada.com]

The NHL's Vezina Trophy winner, Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets, is garnering interest from his homeland, giving him a little more options and negotiating clout in his quest for a new deal in the NHL. The KHL has a substantial offer on the table for the goaltender, and you have to wonder how likely they may be to steal away his services. [Columbus Dispatch]

His former goaltending partner in Philadelphia, Ilya Bryzgalov, is a buy-out casualty for the Flyers. The Flyers announced that Bryzgalov would not be retained beyond the NHL's buy-out period, making him the most expensive buy-out in the history of the league. The 700 Level asks if this was the worst NHL contract of all-time. [700 Level]

The Globe and Mail speculates on if the Bryzagalov news might force the hand of the Vancouver Canucks to finally do something about their on-going goaltender controversy side-show, and find a new home for Roberto Luongo. [Globe and Mail]

I'm not much of a fan of basketball... specifically Miami Heat basketball... but I thought this was a neat little article from the Associated Press. The parallels between the NBA Champion Heat and the NHL's Champion Chicago Blackhawks are striking. [Associated Press]

Today's video is short and sweet, and in honor of the newly unemployed Ilya Bryzgalov. There are a million famous quotes to choose from, but I will go with this one because I'd never seen it before. Is Bryz intimidated by the Pittsburgh Penguins? No. Of course not. He is only afraid of a bear in the forest. Duh.

2013 Draft Prospect Profile #37: Laurent Dauphin

Position: Center
Team: Chicoutimi Saguneens (QMJHL)
Age: 18
Date of Birth: March 27, 1995
Place of Birth: Repentigny, Quebec
Ht: 5'11" Wt: 154lbs
Shoots: Left

Dauphin is a fantastic skater, and uses that trait to get himself into scoring areas. His talent with the puck leads to offense once he arrives in said areas, but until he bulks up he remains a slight player with a ton of potential.

I first took notice of him at the Top Prospects Game. He was a last-minute addition when Hunter Shinkaruk had to back out due to the flu. In an earlier profile on Ryan Hartman, I mentioned the huge hit that Hartman layed on Dauphin 20 seconds into the game. What I didn't mention was that after getting trucked, Dauphin went on to have a fantastic game, finishing with a goal and an assist in a 3-0 victory for Team Orr over Team Cherry. He was named player of the game for Team Orr.

Fucale is a cool and calm, poised goalie that is incredibly athletic. He shows high-end reflexes and is never out in a play. He has elite level mobility and incredible quickness within the crease. He shows very impressive footwork and can get to almost any puck. He possesses an impressive glove hand that is flashy and able to rob some of the QMJHL’s heaviest shooters. He also possesses a good blocker hand and strong control with its rebounds. He plays with great positioning and is always square to shooters. He’s aggressive and enjoys challenging shooters. Fucale is competitive and focused goalie that has an incredible compete level and shows great determination. - See more at: http://futureconsiderations.ca/playerprofiler/Zachary-Fucale/#sthash.QPKIN7da.dpuf

Scouting Reports:

Dauphin had a good rookie season for Chicoutimi, displaying a high amount of upside. He is a skilled player with the puck, with the kind of soft touch and control that a top forward prospect needs. He has shiftiness in his game, as he is able to make quick movements with his feet and hands. He couples strong acceleration with a good top gear. He is quality passer who makes nice saucer distributions, and he can make plays with limited time and space. Dauphin's main area of improvement will have to come from his strength level. He can easily be pushed off of picks, and he has an undeveloped frame. Despite that, he has a good on-ice work ethic, and he battles and backchecks well. His physicality should progress with time.

- Hockey Prospectus

Dauphin is a smart player who combines heady play with a decent skill set. He generates good speed in his skating and is shifty off the rush. He handles the puck well and displays tricky-quick hands. He's creative both in his stickhandling and distribution and is alert in all three zones. - See more at: http://futureconsiderations.ca/playerprofiler/Laurent-Dauphin/#sthash.UmltmRv1.dpuf

- Future Considerations

Why he'd be a good fit in Columbus:

In simple terms, the Jackets need offense, and he provides it. Dauphin is a teammate of Columbus prospect Lukas Sedlak, who has already signed his pro deal with the Jackets. When checking in on Sedlak, the Columbus brass would have had opportunities to see Dauphin up close. If they came away impressed, don't be surprised to see his name called when it's Columbus' pick.

Hockey Prospectus:

"Zykov was one of this season's biggest surprises. He did not come into the QMJHL as an elite scoring prospect, but he really flourished at Baie-Comeau. He is a skilled player, showing nice touch with the puck. He is able to make plays in tight spaces, flashing high-end skill at times. He can distribute the puck at a quality level, showing quick decision-making, with good offensive instincts. Zykov's intriguing element is his physicality. He is quite strong for a U-18 player, and he is proficient at shielding the puck and driving the net."

Artem Anisimov agrees to three-year contract extension with Blue Jackets

0
0
20130414_ter_ay4_332

The Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to terms of a contract extension with pending-restricted free agent forward Artem Anisimov, the team announced Wednesday.

The three-year deal is worth a total of $9.85 million, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie, and will carry an annual average value of $3.2 million.

Anisimov was acquired by the Blue Jackets last season as part of the trade that sent Rick Nash to the New York Rangers. The 25-year-old was in the final-year of a two-year, $3.75 million contract that carried an annual average value of $1.8 million before agreeing to his new contract extension.

Anisimov contributed 18 points (11 goals, seven assists) and averaged 16:24 of ice time in 35 games this season while spending substantial time on the penalty kill (1:33 average) and power play units (1:42 average). Anisimov also recorded a solid 48.9 percent winning percentage in the faceoff circle, despite competing in the highest number of draws on the club (509 in total).

Hockey Prospectus:

"Fucale burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old for Halifax, taking on an unusual amount of CHL responsibility for such a young goaltender. This year, he was one of the top goalies in the QMJHL, and he certainly has several interesting qualities, such as his hockey sense and panic threshold. For a U-18 goaltender, he looks very advanced and collected in net. His movements are very subtle, and he squares up pucks well. He has quick, powerful feet that allow him to move across the crease and position himself efficiently."

The Mystery of the 4th Round Draft Choice

0
0
Gyi0064388375

Last June, long before I became an actual writer here, I wrote this fan post about a mystery surrounding the Canadiens possessing a fifth round draft choice - which they used to select Charles Hudon. I'll copy it into here.

The NHL, today, announced the official order of selection for the 2012 NHL Draft in Pittsburgh next Friday and Saturday. The Canadiens are scheduled to select at 3, 33, 51, 64, 94, 122, and 154. Wait, 122? That's a fifth-round selection, and it had generally been thought that Montreal doesn't have a fifth-round pick this year. So let's track the selections and see who is wrong, Habs fans, or (yikes!) the NHL.

The Canadiens' own fifth-round pick was originally #124. That pick, however, was traded when the Habs acquired James Wisniewski on December 28, 2010. The trade was: Wisniewski for Habs' second-round pick in 2011, and a conditional fifth-rounder in 2012, the condition being that Montreal reached the 2011 playoffs and that Wisniewski played at least 50 percent of its playoff games. That condition, obviously, was met, so that pick went to the Islanders.

Montreal, however, acquired Columbus' fifth-round pick from 2012 (122nd overall), when the team traded the rights to the Wiz to the Blue Jackets last summer. This pick, as well, was conditional. The condition was that Wisniewski signed with Columbus, which he did, so 122nd overall went to Montreal. As well all know, this pick was then traded to Calgary in the Cammalleri trade, in exchange for Bourque and a second-rounder in 2013.

There is also the business of the Anaheim Ducks' 2012 fifth-round pick, which the Canadiens acquired in the Maxim Lapierre trade in 2010. The Canadiens, however, returned that pick to the Ducks in exchange for Paul Mara later that season.

Now look at the NHL's release:

Round 5

122. Montreal (from CBJ)

123. Edmonton

124. Calgary (from MTL)

So, what is there to say about this? Unless I went wrong somewhere, the NHL has goofed. Let's see what happens.

After some investigative work, I figured out this issue.

UPDATE: The mystery has been solved. Per NHL.com, as a part of the Islanders trade, "if that pick (Canadiens' own 5th rounder) is unavailable the Islanders will get a fourth-round pick in 2013." Therefore, for some reason Pierre Gauthier decided to trade his own 5th rounder to Calgary in the Cammalleri trade rather than the Columbus 5th rounder, thus turning the compensation to the Islanders into a 2013 4th rounder. As such, the Canadiens WILL select 122nd, in addition to picking at 3, 33, 51, 64, 94, 154.

...At least I thought.

Now, the order for the 2013 NHL Draft has been posted on NHL.com, and look at this:

115. Vancouver

116. Montreal

117. Toronto (from Ana.)

Looks like we're back to square one in terms of figuring this out. Stay tuned for hopefully an update. For the sake of Habs fans everywhere, hopefully I goofed in the end and not the NHL.

2013 NHL Draft Prospect Profile #38: Josh Morrissey

Morrissey was considered a later round prospect coming into the 2012-2013 WHL season, but a strong campaign with the Raiders has brought his draft stock up dramatically as he came into his own, ending the year ranked 27th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting. Leading his team defensively and offensively, he also showed promise as a top pairing d-man for Team Canada's U18 squad thanks to his strong skating and great vision. His main weakness has been his physical play - he simply hasn't been as dominant as scouts would like to see for someone with his frame, and he needs to put on some more muscle to get himself up to the demands of an NHL game.

He's excellent offensively, but has been more well-rounded than a simple "offensive" defenseman or PP specialist - all indications are that if he continues to develop well, he could be a player who can be relied on in any situation his coaches care to throw at him.

Scouting Reports:

Morrissey's games revolves around his incredible skating and mobility, which is among the best for any defenceman in the 2013 draft class. He's relied upon heavily in Prince Albert to carry the puck through the neutral zone and gain the offensive line, which he does with relative ease. His excellent vision and superb creativity also makes him an effect quarterback on the powerplay where he has shown a knack for one-touch passes and cross-seam plays which often set up his teammates for open one-time shots. His shot from the point, while not overpowering, is accurate and often creates rebounds. His elite mobility allows him to elude penalty killers and find open shooting lanes consistently.

Jr. Hockey Recruit

His strongest tool is his skating, which is easily high end, if not better. He has a very graceful stride, and his footwork is precise in any direction. His top gear, agility, pivots, and gap control stand out in each game he plays. He is also a top-end puck mover, frequently making aware and accurate passes. He can run the point on a top power play unit, jump into the rush, make a good outlet, and flash a highlight reel play with the puck. His defensive awareness is solid, and he has killed penalties at times. Still, he faces a significant issue in his physicality. I would not describe him as soft, as he can make a quality hit at times, but he often is outmuscled for pucks. Coupling this aspect of his game with his undersized frame makes him a risk at the top level.

Why He'd be A Good Fit in Columbus:

If (and this is a BIG If) Morrissey should slip back down into the mid-second or third round, as originally predicted, he could be a nice asset to fill more of the defensive pipeline. With guys like Ryan Murray, Tim Erixon, and David Savard in front of him (among others), there's no rush to bring him into the NHL. Let him build up his frame, keep developing his offensive instincts, and bring him into the game as a strong utility man who could easily mature into a second pairing player.

Morrissey In Action:

Wait, sorry, that's not right.

Much better.

Hockey Prospectus:

"Erne features the ideal power forward style that NHL teams love, as his high-end north/south game is coupled with good skill. His best attribute is his skating; he frequently bursts through the neutral zone, drawing penalties, creating chances, and downright embarrassing defensemen with his speed and acceleration. His willingness to drive to the net combined with his strength are deadly when combined with his speed. One scout described him as a "horse" in terms of his raw physical attributes."

NHL Mock Draft 2013: Columbus Blue Jackets select Ryan Hartman with No.27 Pick

Ryan_hartman

Going into the 2013 SBNation Mock Draft, we were excited to have three first round picks at our disposal. In most cases, the safe play would be to not choose all three players from the same position, instead choosing say, a pair of forwards and a defenseman; or maybe one forward, a lone defender and a goaltender.

Nah, we didn't go that route.

The Jackets have the NHL's top goaltender in Sergei Bobrovsky. Last year, they drafted two very good goaltenders in the second and third rounds in Oscar Dansk and Joonas Korpisalo. Not to mention prospect Anton Forsberg looks like a serious contender for a job with the Jackets down the line.

Thanks to trades and the draft the Jackets are well-stocked with great young defenders, led by last year's second-overall pick Ryan Murray. Dalton Prout had a breakout campaign in 2013, while Tim Erixon, David Savard, Mike Reilly, Will Weber and Cody Goloubef are the future on the back end.

Outside of Boone Jenner, who is the organization's top forward prospect, the future isn't as bright up front. Michael Chaput, Lukas Sedlak, Daniel Zaar, T.J. Tynan and Josh Anderson each offer different levels of promise, but none are elite prospects.

With this in mind, we decided to bring the talent and depth of the forward prospects at least up to par with the goalies and blueliners, using all three 2013 first round picks on forwards.

With the 14th overall pick, we drafted Max Domi, an offensive dynamo with NHL bloodlines. At 19, we went with Valentin Zykov, a Russian power forward who's already in North America playing junior. With the 27th overall pick, we wanted to add a player who could bring serious toughness, competitiveness, a winning attitude, and some offensive ability.

Ryan Hartman, ladies and gentlemen.

That concludes the 2013 SBNation NHL Mock Draft for the Jackets. To add to the strong group of defense and goaltending prospects, we added Domi, Zykov and Hartman. Each player brings something different to the table, and the addition of this trio will do nothing but add to an already budding core of players on the verge of being contenders.

2013 NHL Draft Prospect Profile 39: Nicolas Petan

Petan2

Nicholas Petan

Position: Centre
Team: Portland Winterhawks (WHL)
Age: 18
Date of Birth: March 22nd, 1995
Place of Birth: Vernon, BC (Canada)
Ht: 5' 9" Wt: 165 lbs.
Shoots: Left

On the one hand, Petan is a player who was under the radar for much of the last few years, but has earned a lot of attention thanks to his explosion onto the scene in Portland, not to mention a gold medal with the U18 Team Canada squad at the Ivan Hlinka tournament. Ranked as the 33rd North American skater by NHL Central Scouting, it's not surprising that he's earned a lot of interest as we go into the final push for the draft.

On the other, Petan is a smaller, perhaps even "undersized" player who has had one very good season in the WHL on a loaded squad, but two seasons of otherwise very average performance. His skating is regarded to be excellent, and he clearly can be a playmaker.

Scouting Reports:

In the offensive zone, Petan has shown to be a multi-dimensional threat coupling great vision and playmaking skills with a good wrist shot and quick release. He creates scoring chances for linemates, but can also be a finisher when they set him up. He has a very high hockey IQ and always seems to be in the right place at the right time, and to make smart plays with the puck on his stick. Petan works hard in the corners and the front of the net and shows a lot of fight and grit despite his size. He is not intimidated to go up against bigger and stronger opponents.

-Last Word On Sports

He is a very creative, instinctive offensive player, showing a knack for turning normal plays into scoring chances. He has the pace to play in tight spaces. Petan is certainly a small player, but that helps him with shiftiness, as he is difficult to check in open ice. He possesses a nice first step, and he can move at an above-average level. He has a quality shot, and despite his size, he shows decent defensive ability. His diminutive stature (between 5'8" and 5'9") is his only glaring weakness, and overcoming it will be a challenge. Scouts have described him as feisty in terms of the effort and battle he displays.

-My NHL Draft.com

Why He'd Be A Good Fit In Columbus:

We've talked a lot about how the Jackets could use some more elite scoring talent. Petan certainly could fit that bill, especially if his draft stock dips because of concerns over his size. Unfortunately, that same concern over his size is why Columbus might decide to take a pass - the club has brought quite a few smaller guys into the system, and the lack of size is an issue the organization has felt they need to address. If they're trying to get bigger, it's tough to argue for a 5'9" guy, even if he might have top end scoring talent.
